I'm in Salt Lake City. My soil is mostly organic matter (tested last March) by design. I posted the details of the seeding in September. http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/lawns/msg0900352018060.html?7 The cultivars I chose performed well in the heat of July and August, retaining color and spreading. I watered twice a week at .75inch per watering during the extreme heat (I think we had something like 21 days of 100F or above). I did keep the soil moist in the months immediately after germination (May & June) to nurture the new seedlings, but nothing extreme. I have an easily adjustable automatic Rainbird digital sprinkler controller. I cut way back on watering in September and didn't water at all past Oct. 15. From what I can find on the web about gray snow mold the fungi are always present in lawns, but don't present a problem unless the grass is wet and temperatures stay around 32F or just above - conditions found under dense, slowly melting snow pack, exactly the conditions on my lawn for the last two weeks. I don't think my cultural practices have contributed to the snow mold (other than leaving the grass too long last fall), but it's just been one of those very wet years as I think you know (aren't you up in Davis County?). Now that they've revised the weather forecast to rain for Saturday afternoon, I think I'll wait a few more weeks for the first mowing and hopefully the lawn will repair itself as it greens up and starts to grow in April. It may be a long shot but have you considered that it may be an animal that's causing the mess? We had a lawn that looked v similar to this about 2 years ago and were very puzzled as to what it could be - did a bit of research and discovered that it was the nitrate's in our dog's urine causing the burn. We used a product called Dog Rocks - which filters the excess nitrates from their drinking water, and have a had a lush green lawn ever since! I think you can buy it in most general pet stores. It was a lifesaver for our lawn!

Hey forustringdrums, Snow mold, Yuk, I have it too here in Michigan. Your description sounds about like parts of my lawn, except that I was able to lift by raking, the matted blades of grass a little to allow some air circulation. I also have some brown spots of various sizes, which may be snow mold or dog pee spots or both. So far itÂs wait and see if new growth emerges. IÂm reluctant to advise what you should do because IÂm no expert on snow mold and relatively new to organic lawn care. My plan of attack is that next week (April 15) I am going to spread cracked corn at about 20#/1000 sq ft on the whole lawn and follow that up with a light dusting of compost on the problem areas, i.e. snow mold, dog pee spots, dead spots, thin spots etc. In a few weeks, about the first of May, I expect the grass will have been cut a couple times and any winter damage should be more apparent and IÂll deal with it then by either seeding or transplanting patches of sod from less conspicuous areas of my lawn (back yard). IÂm hoping the cracked corn will remediate the snow mold and reduce the usual powdery mildew outbreaks I see every year. I think your technique for seeding is fine. Just insure good soil/seed contact and keep it moist until established. You mentioned pink mold in the grass around your tree. Corn meal or cracked corn may help, but you should consider placing a mulch ring around that tree. Better for the tree and you wont have to worry about lawn issues there. Small shrubs and shade loving plants look good in a mulch ring. Bill Hill

If it is pink snow mold, it's likely that it has done permanent damage. If it is gray snow mold, carefully rake the areas and dispose of the waste and the turf may recover.
