Want to level my dirt (lawn) before laying sod

A few months ago I used a sod cutter and removed my lawn. I then tilled in ammend. I then today replaced the whole sprinkler system by digging large trenches, etc.

My concern is that a few weeks ago I noticed when it rained that my dirt felt like walking on a water bed. It was so full of air. I don't want to sod and then have the ground settle a huge amount.

I was wondering if it would make sense that once it is raked out to where I have the grade as I want it and it looks correct, to rent a lawn roller from Home Depot, fill it full of water, then try to compact down the soil a bit so that it will not sink down a lot after sodding? I am fine with doing this now, then (if need be) letting it sit for a few weeks or even a month or two, then doing this again (if that is the approach). Then proceed with all the processes for sodding as described by the place I purchase from.

Help , any advice appreciated.

That's basically what I did this past summer. I know most everyone on this board is against tilling though. I had it tilled with a tractor. Then let it set for a month. Then drag-raked it with a ride-on mower. No lumps. Looks perfect.
But, I'm in central Florida. Sandy soil. I don't know how tilling would work in clay. Don't know what your soil is like.

That is hilarious...and so true!! I know exactly what you're talking about and we're showing our age. They haven't made water beds for the past 30 years.

I'm the one who started the anti-tilling movement here. Several others have joined the movement, but we're still only about a handful. The problem with tilling is settling. When you fluff up the soil with a hand held rototiller, you cannot control how deep the tines dig in. If you could remove all the fluffy soil after you tilled it, what you would find is a rolling surface. That surface is caused by the tiller digging in where the soil happened to be softer and skipping over harder (dry??) spots. I've used a tiller before. It's fun to let it dig in and churn the soil to fluffy dust. You can really see it working - and ruining the soil. After you have it rototilled, you will level the surface in preparation for the new sod or seed. When you level the surface on top of an uneven subsurface, the soil surface will eventually settle to match the profile of the uneven subsurface. For me "eventually" took 3 full years. Now I have to level it again.

Sand does settle. It settles much faster than 3 years, but it does settle. It might be easier to keep it level in sand. Also tilling with a tractor is better because it holds the tool at one depth.

You can try the roller to settle the soil. You should use it again after you apply the sod. Why? To ensure the bottom of the sod is in good contract with the top of the underlying soil. Roots cannot grow through air to reach the soil.

What should you have done? If you wanted to change the grading for drainage or to add interest to the area, you should have used a tractor with a box blade on the back. That is the equipment used by professional landscapers to prepare land for planting. And if you are not already a professional finish grader, don't think you can rent the equipment and become one in a weekend. That skill can take years of daily practice to master.

Now that you can see my yard below, I will be clearing out between the water feature (manufactured stone blocks) and the ledge on the right. The water feature is actually hiding a ledge as tall as it is behind it. The water feature is level and the blocks are about 8 inches tall. This gives you an idea of the elevation change from where it starts to where it ends. I had done some digging when I put in the water feature which is where the mound at the far back left came from. My goal for this thread is to bring the grade up about 2.5 stones at the right side of the water features and go straight across. I will clear out the stump (it's not attached to the ground, was just placed there) as well as the logs between so I can raise the grade a ways back and eventually put a shed between the water feature and the right ledge. Sorry it took me a while to get pictures. I have attached them below. You can click any thumbnail, then it will open larger. You can then click that picture and it will open even larger. More advice is appreciated.

I am converting from fescue/common bermuda to Patriot bermuda this summer. The common is taking over my lawn and I want a nice bermuda if I am going to have it. A PhD turfgrass extension/research specialist did bring up a very important point to consider. He suggested that I till to a depth of 4' to 6' and here is why. He stated that RU will kill the top portion of the plant but not the rhizomes underneath the ground that are laying dormant. By tilling, it brings the rhizomes to the surface. Upon doing this he suggested to wait 2-3 weeks after tilling. When/if the rhizomes begin to generate new shoots hit it again with another blast of RU or equivalent. One thing he stressed, and others on this board have too. Hit the bermuda with a shot of nitrogen 2 weeks prior to applying RU to really get it growing. When you apply the RU hit it with Roundup Pro or generic equivalent and the full 4 quart per acre rate. He stated that if you merely make it sick it will not take in any more RU, unlike other herbicides. When the rhizomes begin to grow shoots hit it with the 3% solution of the 4 lb per gallon RU. He stated that he once was unable to till on his property due to erosion issues and fought killing the rhizomes with RU for a long time since he was unable to till. To be sure, I DO NOT want to till. But, given the tendencies I have experienced with my lawn, I am considering it. I once thought my neighbors bermuda was encroaching on my lawn, which it is in some areas. However, base on his information, I now think that some of the once-dormant rhizomes are a big reason why I now have widespread bermuda showing up and choking out my fescue. I have only lived here a year and can only speculate what the previous owner did. But, both of my neighbors have the same bermuda that I have and am left wondering if my lawn was at one time the same. I do not want to till for other reasons too. But, if I have a choice to till and fight leveling or not till and fight this darn common bermuda I think I would choose to deal with leveling. This is just my opinion but I really want to do all that I can to get minimize it. He did state that if the bermuda was not that widespread in my lawn then he would not see a need to till as he does recognize that there is a great deal of extra work involved. Given this, I guess each person has to make his own determination of what might be right given their own individual circumstances. That's what I am fighting with now.

Portland has a zone 8? Is that Sunset zone or USDA zone? Doesn't really matter other than to make the point that there is a lot of zone 8 in Texas and the deep south. Zone's are worthless bits of info when it comes to lawn care. You actually do have compacted soil! This is not a first but it really is rare. Driving a car on a lawn that gets regular irrigation (i.e. Portland) is going to compact the soil underneath. If you want to do this right, in my opinion you need heavy equipment to rake this and level it. The tool is a box blade and it comes on the back of a tractor. It is not a tool you rent and learn how to use over the weekend. It would require hiring a landscaper. Cost varies all over. It would be worth a few free quotes. If you want to try a less invasive approach you could cover the lawn in an inch or so of mulch for a few weeks. Mulch has the effect of allowing the soil underneath to revitalize itself with constant temps and moisture conditions. I'm thinking the compacted soil might fluff itself up when the soil microbes are allowed to repopulate in there. If you have other leveling issues away from the area where the soil was compacted by the car, then the mulch might not be enough. How does the property drain when the rains come? Do pools of water form or is there a stream of water running through anywhere? Or is the soil raised above the surrounding concrete which would allow for drainage. Is the house clearly above the soil level by at least 4 inches (to the bottom of the "sill plate")? Does water pour or move toward the house when it rains? Is rain gutter drainage away from the house? I'm asking because leveling can be a DIY job if the situation is good. If you don't have to remove soil, then you can do it yourself. We always ask what kind of grass, but in this case, it probably doesn't matter. But it might matter. What do you plan to do with the yard? Will it become a baseball diamond or is it just for looking at?

My best sod patches have been about like you described. I do dig down enough to make the sod fit evenly with the existing grass level. I would wait to dig till I got the sod. Sod thickness varies quite a bit. Plant the sod as soon as possible and do not leave it stacked at all. If you just have to get it the day before unstack it and place it in shade and water it a little. If there are a lot of tree or shrubbery roots you might think about cutting them around the perimeter of your patch with a shovel. After placing your sod fill the seams and edges with potting soil. (Yard dirt likely has bad seeds in it.) Flood the entire patch with water until soft. Carefully pack the sod with your foot (It will be squishy) to make it have the best ground contact possible. The following days water as needed. That could be almost every day for a while in this heat.

Yes indeedy, roll your ground to settle it where it can from that action. But don't think to use a full roller tank...you wouldn't be able to push it. Water weighs 8 1/3 lbs per gallon....and the tank can take as much as ....well, too much for you to think to push.
Fill the tank no more than 1/3 full and go over the ground where you feel its necessary...try going in a north/south, then east/west manner and test results afterwards.
At this time do take a look at how the ground will drain...away from the building.
