Now I've got skunks or other animals digging up my lawn in their search for grubs. I know I have a grub problem that I was going to deal with next year (GrubEx application in summer) but is there something I should be doing now?

Besides trapping and shooting the offenders, can I spread something on the lawn to keep them away?

Bayer has a 24hr grub killer. I believe home depot carries it.

...I'm not sure at what temperatures grubs start heading into the deep for winter, but I'd assume you should get it down ASAP.

I've never used this product so check the label.

flora_uk, I can still see ungerminated seeds delightedinco, I tried the Scotts EZ Seed too - it sometimes worked, and it's very convenient to use (I like the built-in spreader on the smaller containers - the gardening newbies this product is aimed at are not going to own seed spreaders or roto-tillers, don't know what kind of soil or fertilizer to use, and have no idea what 5 lbs. per 400 feet looks like when spread. But it is so expensive for what you get). I bought it only because Scotts used to have $5-off discounts on it. Pennington has a similar product as part of their Smart Seed line that's a bit cheaper (but not much), although I wonder why they claim much longer germination times than the Scotts product. There's also Scotts Patch Master which is cheaper and I haven't used yet. I think I'm going to try just regular seed, and watering more often (a real pain here - there's no outside garden hose faucets, so I either need to use big watering buckets or run a hose from an indoor faucet. I have a 50' coiled garden hose with a sink-faucet adapter at one end and a trigger sprayer at the other for that purpose). I have a bag of Vigoro Starter Fertilizer 20-27-5, and have applied quite a bit of new seeding soil (of several varieties depending on location) since the ground is mostly hard clay. I did my best to loosen it with a metal gardening rake before adding a new layer of topsoil. Any recommendations as to what type of grass I should use? I'm near Washington DC, which means both humid 100Â°F+ in the summer and subfreezing icy winters. The big-box stores around here seem to favor tall fescoe, which is also what the combination seed/mulch/fertilizer products use in this market. I like the bright green color, how fast it grows, and its tolerance for all sorts of bad weather, but not the thin straight grass blades that get matted down like cheap carpeting when walked on. The second most popular here seems to be the generically-labeled "sun and shade mix". The real nurseries have more variety to choose from but also higher prices. I don't want anything that goes dormant or turns yellow or brown in the winter. The side yard is in heavy shade due to closely-spaced houses and lots of old trees, but the backyard (which I'm more concerned about since that's the main socializing area) gets alot of sunlight. I also hear some people say I shouldn't even try to grow from seed during the hot summer. But I'd like to have a lawn by fall if possible, when I plan to have a new renter. I could plant sod - but it's inconvenient given how thirsty the stuff is when new (given the water situation I mentioned earlier) and hard to transport for someone with a small car and a bad back. Any ideas?

FWIW, I've always had spotty germination with PCF and Gaillardia. To compensate, I sow REALLY thickly. I'm not as diligent about watering; they get it when I'm out there, and whichever ones I "see" that are definitely needing it. Ruds are also sprinkled really thickly, but I have spotty patchy germination, as well. Do you "place" your seeds in the containers, or just sprinkle them in? I count pretty much nothing; just sow heavily. And...FWIW, I'm still WSing- by that I mean still going...because I just didn't do enough over the winter/early spring, and I just want to do more. It's not too late to still start things. Toss in some Sweet Williams- they're bis, so they'll grow well this year, and flower next (and you'll likely never have to WS them again; I WSd them one year about 5 years ago, and don't have to ever re-WS them. Super easy). Also Dianthus/Carnations don't need cold strat, so you could do those...I'm sure there's piles of perennials that don't need cold strat that you could start now; I just don't have a list.

Betsy, SO sorry to read that you have been having problems also. So far.....fungus gnats are not on my present list of problems...Thank God for small favors. I really have had enough to deal with, so I'm very thankful that fungus gnats isn't on the list too. I would guess that everyone has different mixes that they use for their seeds. This is a potting mix recipe I came across a while back and it works well. That is if you don't do something stupid like I did and not follow it. :-( 1-2 cu. ft. bag of pine bark fines or soil conditioner. Then add (1) 2lb can of Pro Mix If the ProMix you are using already has perlite in it, you only need to add 3lb medium grade, if it doesn't have any perlite, you should add (2) 2lb. coffee cans of perlite. If the ProMix you use has Limestone added you should throw in a handful of dolomitic lime. If it doesn't have any....you should add 1/4 cup dolomitic lime (not high calcium and not peletized). Add 1/4 cup agricultural gypsum, 1/4 cup Miracle Grow 20-20-20 or any other water soluable complete fertilizer. Add 1/8 cup Epsom Salts, and 2 TBS garden sulfur. 1 1/3 cup Merit Granular (optional to control fungus gnats). I've never used the Merit insecticide, because I've never had fungus gnat problems (knock on wood). Anyway.....you need to mix these ingredients real well dry, and then mix thoroughly again when wetting. Like I said earlier.... I'm sure this is but one variation on a theme, but if followed it does seem to work quite well. Hope this helps. Linda

newdawn1895 - Not only in the downtown areas, but the art district and the Riverview districts are all undergoing fabulous transformations. Chattanooga is such a neat town. I wish I had taken a photograph of my sons street. The avenue was absolutely beautiful! Most of the houses and yards were well kept, and the flowering trees were gorgeous hanging over the street. :) golddust - First of all, I wanted to tell you how much I love your dog. What a cutie! Secondly...what a tub! I love large old tubs like the claw-foot that my son has. I asked the guys if either had taken a bath and they answered "no" because they were using the tub as a storage place for their bathroom supplies. Now that we have provided a space saver tower over the toilet, the tub is now free for bathing. LOL You are so lucky to have many of the original features, like the built-ins. Your kitchen appliances are tops! I would love to know the date that my son's place was built, and also the history. Guess I'll have to ask the owners.

I just spread out 25k sq ft ($100) of the Bayer grub stuff. Supposed to work within 24 hrs. Two sprinklers are running to get the stuff watered in.

I couldn't afford to treat the entire lawn.....only the areas that I know for sure are infected. Might not be the best for it but it's all I can do today.

The skunk (my wife saw it when she came was back last night and tore the crap outta an area of my lawn. Grrrrr!!!!!!

Welcome to my world,we are having the same problem.We have a canyon directly beyond our back fence,but we have been at this house over 40 years,and this is the first time we've had this problem in all those years.We know it's a skunk/racoon problem.Last weekend dh and i went to lowes and got 5 bags of spectracide.We put 4 bags of it down last week and watered it in good.Then this mornig we go out and the damage is worse than it's ever been.The whole platoon of them must have been out there last night.Almost made me cry.

We just had this new lawn(sod) put in about 5 years ago,wasn't cheap,and now this.Makes me CRAZY!!!

Can I spread something to keep them away?

You can spread buckshot but then you have to deal with the aroma of dead skunks.

I walk my dog in skunkland, TX every night. The only times I've seen skunks is in the early evening well before 10pm. I would suggest some early evening entertainment of shooting them with an Air Soft rifle to discourage them. Air Soft won't kill them but it might sting.

I wonder if Ã¯Â¿Â½the skunk is digging more because the grubs are going deeper to avoid the poison. Ã¯Â¿Â½The damage may be bad at the moment but I bet that they give up on digging in your lawn after a few failed attempts at finding those little morsels. Ã¯Â¿Â½

Contrary to popular opinion, skunks are not solely looking for grubs. They will eat bascially anything, and I have had damage in the past from them digging up any source of food. I don't have grubs, but I do have a good amount of earthworms, and that's what they were digging up in my yard. I put a motion activated spot light outside to scare them off, but sometimes they don't leave right away. For 50 bucks you can get a motion activated sprinkler that will go on for five minutes when it detects motion in your yard. The noise of a sprinkler going off will certainly scare them off, and I can't imagine they like getting hit with water either.

I had put out a trap but the skunk didn't return for a few days. Lo and behold one morning, there he/she was in the trap. I few rounds of buckshot and the skunkk met its maker. But jesus maria do they smell!!! LOL!!!

If you use something like a have a heart trap, line it completely with black plastic so they skunk cannot see you coming. With that you should be able to relocate it without setting off the defense.
