I am with you, Gandle, never did like sweet, carbonated drinks. Plain water or iced tea, unsweetened, is what I quench my thirst with.

Yes, but the original coke bottles held like six ounces. They were a treat, and a very rare treat for me as a kid. We packed our lunches for school. I never saw the inside of a school cafeteria until I think the sixth grade. We packed and ate at our desks. Since most of the children, no, make that all of the children were within walking distance of school, we were allowed to leave at lunch hours and if I were very lucky I'd be given six cents to buy a coke at the corner store, the penny being the deposit on the bottle.

People are very blase' about the value of a dollar anymore. They'd be more likely to have a dollar bill than a pocket of change. A vendor tried at that price, people bit,and now it's history. Dollar it is. Neat and no need for change.

I'd sure like to see a tax put on carbonated drinks. Just a penney or two per bottle. It would put a lot of loot in the old coffers and nobody would even notice the difference. Since it has absolutely no nutritive value, you could justify calling it a sin tax.

Wonder just how big a sells spike that Mentos and Diet Coke did in the aftermath of the Myth Buster show this past week?

Yep Coke and 7 up came in 6 oz bottles...Pepsi was "cheap"...12 oz for a nickel!
But as for the mentos/diet coke thing...I can buy a 2 liter bottle of cola for $.69...supermarket brand but it sprays just as high when a Menthos is dropped in!

Gandle, I think a lot of us have difficulty with the changing value of the dollar. I think there is a section in our subconscious which, at some point, has noted the cost of X, and no matter how many years go by, X is still only worth that noted amount; I also think X can be fluid if one is constantly dealing with it. I can handle the steadily rising cost of groceries, but car shopping was a shocker. DH, who did almost no shopping from his 20's until retirement, still has to "multiply by 5" in order to get a 'feel' for the value; that is: if he thinks 60 cents is what a gallon of milk will cost, he has to multiply that by 5 in order to get to today's price. It works in reverse also, when he sees a car sticker at $25,000, he can divide by 5 -- and sure enough, that's what he paid for his beloved luxury car in the late 60's.

Go to home page on link, which has nice explanations of all the differing ways to compute value; or just fill in the blanks with $ and year. Your 5-cent coke is about 50-cents now, and that's close to right if one buys a 6-pack of 12-oz cans at the grocery.

Neat site Meldy. Just plugged in a few prices that I remembered paying. Like the hotel I stayed in in NYC when I was a buyer for a department store in the 1970's was $50.00 - Now would be $161.00 Still cheap, I guess for NYC today where I've read that the average hotel price per night is now $250.00

And that $0.30/gallon of gas I paid in 1968 would be $1.68/gallon today - a veritable bargain!
