I try to DVR most of what I watch because I detest commercials, especially the Progressive insurance commercials.

I saw one last night. Mary Lou Retton falling out of a
Pinata! ahahahaha It cracked me up. laughed out loud.
I don't remember what the company was though! LOL

One of Tide's commercials ends with the line "Style is an option. Clean is not."

So "clean" is "not an option"? Much the same as "failure is not an option"?
Alert the grammar police!

What they meant to say was "Style is an option. Dirty is not."

I guess once people think about the ad's line, they can figure out what the intent was, but if people have to think about it to understand it, then the ad is a failure. Good ad execs know they have seconds to make the right impression and get the correct message across.

Dairy Queen has the stupidest commercials now!
They used to have the talking lips which I thought were funny, now it's some geeky guy who talks about kittens in bubbles, and water-skiing, and yes now the pinata with Mary Lou Retton in it.
She is cute, the ads are not. Sorry Kat!! It appears we don't have the same sense of humour.

Any ad that the government puts out are sickening with their frequency. Every 3rd one is on that the government is promoting, whether it's Health care, all-day kindergarten, organ donor. etc etc. It's not the topic it's the frequency....they are relentless in their air-time.

Haven't seen a pet one for a little while. Oh the Beneful one, where the little grey and white dog brings his toy to his dad, then trots across the window seat to him. Very cute.

Jasdip, I thought the same about the dairy Queen commercials. They don't make sense.

I absolutely love the samsung commercial.

I like the M&M commercials and don't like any commercials that uses heavy drum sounds like some auto brand and furniture brand commercials. Listening to it once is alright but over and over again gets into my nerve. The noise is very tiring and annoying. I turn the volume off or change the channel.

Because of that I never remember who they are. It's pointless of an ad when it annoys the audience. Bad marketing!

Another one of my all time favorite is the Heineken commercial. The one of the house warming party. All the ladies was screaming when the hostess was showing off her master bath walking closet. Moments later, the screaming was interrupted by another sound of screaming from downstairs. The scene switched over and showed the host showing off his walking refrigerator filled with Heineken beers!

One that I hate is a product I'm not even sure of. Maybe orange juice? A woman smacks her yardboy around while the women inside watch. Yep, hate it so much can't bare to watch enough to give you a good synopsis. LOL

I still like the Geico commercils almost all of them I love the pig who says wee wee wee all the way home. A new one for Sonic (I think) the ghost who is eating a hot dog and the lady cop who says they receive d a complaint about someone rattling chains and the ghost takes offence then we see a strange character doing a weird dance and rattling chains in the distance and the Lady cop says have a good day or something like that .

I still like the one where a guy orders a sandwich and when it comes he said he didn't want mayo or something on it and the waitress takes off the top bread and wipes it on the side of the table. just dont' remember the product! lol

I'm amazed at the number of commercials that claim the company can protect you from the IRS. The salesman asks, "Do you owe back taxes? Have you failed to file your taxes?" Then he promises to 'stand between you and the IRS' and negotiate a lower payment.

Geez, maybe if we *collected* all those unpaid taxes, we wouldn't have to raise the national debt ceiling! There must be a LOT of people who owe or it wouldn't be cost effective to run so many commercials.

You know the big productions they make in a train station or other large public area. Well, the commercial I like is the one where the guy thinks they are going to be doing that and suddenly realizes none of the other singers are there. Can't recall what the product is for, but it's pretty funny

I dislike all Geico and Progressive commercials. Would you really want to be insured by a company that has to spend millions on commercials? I also dislike the Tums commercial where the food is fighting the person. I usually mute commercials.

Our all time fave commercial is the travelers one with the dog worrying about his bone and the song playing through it is Trouble by Ray LaMontagne, I love everything that man sings and that song with that commercial is a big hit.

I absolutely HATE the ad for Angel Soft t.p. where the guy keeps telling the wife "we're out of toilet paper"........... I just want to slap him so badly. lol

One I love is for Sherwin Williams paint (I think) Where all the paint chips form to make different scenes. Very creative.

Around Memorial Day there was a Sears (I think) commercial where a business man opens his briefcase and inside is a grill with food cooking on it. "DO NOT ATTEMPT" flashed on the screen underneath. DUH!

Only once I saw an ad to order your own banana plant at $10 each. They were naming all the things you could do with bananas - banana bread, banana pancakes, banana ice cream - it was all so mundane, it made me laugh. They tried to emphasize money savings but even if you could grow a banana, the yield was low I believe. I know bananas are expensive in some places but they are about 59 cents/pound here. I'm sure I could buy more bananas for $10 than I'd get from my own banana plant.

Today while watching Days of Our Lives...6 - SIX times (that I saw) was the diaper ad where the dad takes the little boy into the bedroom to change his diaper and he SPRAYS all over...and then he SPRAYS more! YUCK! (yes..I know it is only a commercial..but YUCK!) It was on just about every commercial break!...and there was a few I missed while I was doing laundry! YUCK! lol

Paula, banana tree is unique in a way that the whole tree can be used in food or food preparation. Of course, we already know how the fruits are used. The leaves of certain banana type can be used to wrap various type of food. The flavor that the leaves release is just wonderful. The center stem of the leaves can be cut up and use as disposable spoons (it's a cultural thing). The flower and young trunk are edible (for human consumption). The older trunk is more for animal consumption. For this reason, a banana tree can be of more value than others.

Now, back to commercials. Ravencajun mentioned about a Pepsi commercial and it reminded me of another Diet Pepsi commercial, the one that starts: "Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets..." I love that one and Sofia is good!

sandy in ia, I so agree with you about that Huggies commercial. In fact, I emailed a friend in another town who I knew would be watching at that time. She said she had actually yelled at the tv she was so sick of it! LOL

I'm watching more and more on the internet and most of the time I can avoid commercials altogether this way. I'm glad I put the money toward DSL rather than cable or satellite.

It's curious when people talk about what's effective or not in advertising. It's hard to know what really *will* work. It's interesting how some of the best known ads did nothing for sales. For instance, the Apple Macintosh "1984" ad is talked about to this day but didn't achieve anywhere near what they hoped and it's dubious whether it did anything for sales. Publicity, yes, sales though are the desired result. And many people who never saw them in their lives still know and talk about the now infamous "Burma Shave signs" but Burma Shave is long gone. Interesting too. Unique and relatively cheap advertising, had people talking up the product name, name recognition was there and even had people *looking* for the ads! (Not unlike the "Hillside Singers" Coke commercial where people called the stations asking them to play the commercial!) But unfortunately for Burma Shave, few people would buy the product.

Seeing hospitals advertising is totally repugnant to me. Prescription medicines, CAT scan procedures and otherwise is likewise annoying. Any supposed "professional" advertising is laughable to me and they lose credibility AFAIC. In a way it's kind of sad to see. One of the big name well-known, high profile attorneys for criminal defense can't get a case these days and is essentially ambulance chasing now.

Lately I just haven't seen many memorable commercials, that is memorable in a positive way. I guess the one where the cat gets the bloodhound to help find the litter box is shake your head OK. I do enjoy some of the foreign commercials when they do shows with them as the star. Many places have less uptight people so they can have more fun with them. I really laughed at the German "need glasses?" (Brille notig?) commercial.

And the political commercials have already started. Heavy advertising for Wisconsin here lately. Although I realie that the market area includes portions of Wisconsin, we seldom would get it in the regular elections. Suggests to me either the elections are extremely urgent (to the parties) and/or ad rates have dropped. In a few months it'll start heavy political ads nationwide so I'll need to change batteries in the remote to keep up with changing channels.

One good thing about the state "shutdown". No more commercials about how "the other side" won't listen to reason - call them and tell them you want __________.

Funny how many people, including me, despise the Progressive ads but they keep on with new variations all the time. That girl creeps me out.

I like the ones with the babies that talk like adults. I think it's an insurance company. The first one he was on a plane and the latest is in his crib (or solitary as he calls it). He makes me laugh every time!

I guess my all-time fave was a guy in a grocery store, and is watching a kid throwing a terrible tantrum, and the words appear on the screen........GOT CONDOMS?

As far as the thousand medical commercials
a few years ago Time mag had an article about the overabundance of medical commercials that picture diseases and convince the populace that they must have such and such medical treatment or drug in order to survive that it does what it is intended to do make money for drug companies.. Wish I could find that article again

Could we get a law to prohibit TV ads for hospitals, doctors, clinics, and *prescription drugs*? We prohibit TV ads for cigarettes. If we could conquer the tobacco lobby, we should be able to conquer the Big Pharma lobby.

If you need a drug, your MD will prescribe it. HE tells YOU. You don't "Ask your doctor about prescribing XYZ."

(I'm feeling cross, having just bought a 90-day supply of Advair for my asthma. Cost is just shy of $700 retail. Advair's fended off generics and has been reaping profits since 2001. I'm sure they recouped their research and development costs a LONG time ago. Their ads are constantly on TV.)
