renovating existing lawn and expanding lawn

Hi,

I am very bad at growing grass. And we've just bought a place with a pretty bad looking backyard. There's a bunch of ivy, trash bushes, etc that will be cleared out Oct. 22 and 23. The guy who's doing that work for us will cut the stuff to the ground, apply round-up to the ivy and return in about 2 weeks to remove the ivy. There are mature trees which we will keep. In the shadiest part of the yard, I plan to establish beds for hostas, etc. But in the sunnier part (still part shade), I'd like to expand the grass area.

I was thinking that we would spread compost over the newly cleared area and wait until Spring to try to plant grass seed. Or would it be better to put some kind of barrier (newspaper?) down to discourage the ivy, etc from returning. (I know we're going to be fighting the ivy for a while--I hate that stuff.) And that we would overseed the existing lawn then too. But from what I'm reading here, spring is not a good time to overseed. . . .

I would appreciate any advice!

Thanks,

Catherine
