Well, as usual I wasn't very thorough in my answer. First, the amount of watering turf needs is dependent on the amount of rain that occurs, the type of soil (clays tend to have good water rentention), and temperature (affects water loss to evaporation). Observation of the turf (is it showing signs of water stress--dry blades, browning, etc.) will be the key to watering. In Spring and Fall, temperatures are usually lower and rainfall more aboundant so less watering will be needed. Second, the same 1" per app per week rule(to keep it from dying during dry periods) should also be sufficient for your fescue (fescue is more deep rooting than KBG and can reach water that is deeper in the soil). Others will correct me if I'm wrong in regard to fescue. Once again, deeper watering "trains" grass to deeper root, makes for a sturdier turf (won't tear up ealily) and makes it less suceptable to drought. I am not aware of any study that has definitively reported how much water turf needs on a daily basis--probably because of the variables. If you can aford to water on a daily basis, I suppose it's moot. Hopefully someone will give you advice on any detriments to daily watering.

What kind of lawn do you have? If you have non-spreading grass like perennial ryegrass or tall fescue, you might want to overseed after core aeration. In any case, if you have compacted or clay soil like we do in much of Ohio, core aeration yearly can impact turf quality substantially. I aerated started the first year after seeding and do it every fall.

I called a local nursery (from where the boxwoods were purchased) to ask about our problem. She said the boxwoods in the nursery are looking the same! So it can't be anything I did! She suspects that the sharp drop in temperature here in Toronto (are you cold in Connecticut?) after a week of balmy temps, along with strong, drying winds may be the culprits. She did suggest watering them. I imagine it is the same principle involved when giving plants really long drinks of water before the Fall freeze. Although it is cold, the water helps them survive. I've set the sprinkler back out and am crossing my fingers. I'm also hoping it warms up again soon. If anyone else wants to chime in, Greenhavengardening and I are listening :)

capewillard, If you are hoping for some informed answers it would be helpful to have a photo of your grass (one close up and one distance) so we can determine if what your looking at is a typical example of spring grown grass on the Cape. Frankly a few things have thrown up red flags for me. Number one is you did not choose a Cape Cod mix of grass seed, secondly I have great reservations about using a product that mentions in its own description it can even be applied at the time of seeding without causing injury to germinating seedlings of most cool-season grasses. , and finally to be honest the few times that I have used Jonathan Green products (pellatized lime...that wasn't and grass seed..hard to tell why my sucess rate was so poor) I have been unsatisfied.
