Lousy Year for My Lawn // $$$$

Hi,
I live in central Massachusetts and my lawn is quite thick, but lacks color and has been treated with a fungicide for dollar spot yesterday. The ph is 6.8,

DC and Morph were kind enough to pass on the proper instructions on how to water my lawn; which I will follow next year. And hopefully the proper way to water will help in reducing the risk of further lawn diseases.

Now the lawn services company is reporting I have about approximately a little over 1" of thatch that is inhibiting the water and fertilizer absorption into the soil.
They are recommending a de-thatching (a service they do not provide) now, followed by a plug aeration and another de-thatching again next spring.
Are these steps necessary or are there other things I could try?
