Doing my own lawn maintenance this year - few questions (Long Island)

So I am taking back control of my lawn maintenance from my landscaper, except for actual weekly cuttings. That being said, I haven't maintained a lawn since I was a teenager (many moons ago) helping out my dad.

Live on Long Island, where temps are already fluctuating between 70 degrees and low teens. My grass is a bit bare, so definitely want to overseed it.

Having a hard time determining the following:

1. When can I start working on the lawn (ie: warm enough, right time of year, or any other trigger to use)

2. Having hard time understanding the order and timing of overseeding and putting down crabgrass/grub preventer

3. Plan to follow Scott's lawn maintenance program, is there anything else recommended?

4. Can I continually overseed throughout the season to make grass thicker?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!
