Did you take those pictures in the dark? The coarse bladed grass looks like St Augustine. It also looks like it was neglected and left unwatered. Unwatered St Augustine will die out making room for weeds. When it is watered regularly (every 2 weeks in the cool part of the year and weekly during the warmer months) it will dominate most other grasses. You have some bunch grass types of weeds in there that will need to be dug out. You might look for a Weed Hound tool at any garden supply store. Start watering now deeply (at least an hour in each zone) but only every other week. If the grass looks wilty before 2 weeks is up, water again but water for longer next time. Don't allow water to run off. If the soil can't absorb more than 10 minutes of water, stop and let it soak in for a half hour and resume the full watering session. In the heat of summer plan to water weekly. Set your mower for the highest setting. It will take the St Augustine a few weeks to grow up that tall but once it does, weld your adjusters in place. There is never any reason to mow St Augustine lower than full height. If you don't weld the adjusters in place, you will go on vacation next summer and your well meaning neighbor will come by, lower the setting and scalp your lawn. For many reasons you want it as tall as possible. If you follow those watering and mowing suggestions, you should never see weeds again...unless you have deep shade. I fertilize my St Aug on the federal holidays with home made organic fertilizer (basically rabbit food). If you use chemical ferts, you can follow the same schedule but skip the 4th of July. I went to school at Maxwell for 3 months back in 79. Nice place. Had to turn my watch ahead 50 years when I returned to California.

Thank you all. Identification even of trees is not my strong suit. Yeah, that part dries out especially fast. Notice it is strung out over a silver maple stump probably a clean foot from any good soil. Amazing how well the stuff grows. That spot is near the edge of the lawn and NEVER gets watered. If folks like Bermuda then I recommend it anyolace your neighbors will not mind. Stuff is impossible to keep out of the flower beds. Thank goodness for round-up

Yellow or purple nutsedge (the only difference I'm aware of is the flower color). Pull it as soon as you see it: after just a few leaves, it grows a small tuber (the "nut"), which can sprout a new plant. (The nut is usually left in the soil when the plant is pulled.) You have a good chance of eradicating it, as you can see the color difference (some can't), and have noticed that it grows more quickly than the grass after a mowing. Keep pulling the lighter, taller bits as soon as you see them. I got it all out of my backyard, but will never be able to eradicate all the nutsedge in the pasture, so at times more pops up in the back lawn..
