so we tried to save money..headaches....

Well when we put in our wood boiler and built a building to house it we were doing it to save money..i knew it was not a good idea but couldn't fight the MEN in the family.

Well I built a 16x16 building around the wood boiler, to hold wood, and to make it easy for my hubby to get wood inside i put in a very expensive double steel door that opened out from the center with 9 light windows in the top for sunlight..

so far it had worked really nice, until the 4th load of wood yesterday.

Hubby (head injury remember) was driving tractor with bucket full of wood trying to get it close to the shed to be able to reach it easily thru the door to stack it..and WHAMMMMOOOOO ! he hit the door with the tractor..embarrassed he went into the house..son next door had witnessed the accident and changed and hurried over to help..door on left side (2nd to open) hanging by fractured splinters of wood ready to fall off..all screw holes shattered where hinges go on..we managed to get it off before it fell and broke any glass..and there wasn't a lot of metal damage to the door but the entire frame was shattered into tiny little splinters.

we had a snowstorm moving in and it was nearly dark..but we put the door inside and went to work on the frame to reinforce it with some shims and screws to temporarily get it fixed well enough to run 3" screws through to the framework of the buildingand try to rehang the door..after 2 hours in freezing temps, we managed to get the door rehung, all out of square and didn't want to close..more shimming and moving screws around we forced the door closed and locked..the right hand door worked fairly well..so we can still get in and out..but there is a note on the left door "do not open this door" and we won't be able to properly fix it until summer when it is warm enough to take it all apart and try over..hopefully we'll be able to figure it out at that time, in the meantime i'm trying to not make hubby feel too badly..as his depression is bad enough..

but we did get over a cord of firewood in before the storm, i got up this morning and he had sneaked in with the wheelborrow another cord..bless his heart..he felt so bad..

Bless his heart.

I would have wiped out the whole wood shed, not just a door.
Sounds as if he tries really hard.

lol, Jan. I was thinking that if it had been MY DH on the tractor, neither door would have survived the experience. So, I'm thinking, heck it was only ONE door -- not a big deal!

Seriously, bre. Relax... it really could have been much worse. Broken doors can be repaired or replaced, broken bones would have hurt far more.

Im a Phoenix gardener and can offer a few nuggets from my experience... did you use pre-packaged cactus soil? If so, I would suggest that this was not a good choice (sorry). I tried it once in a raised planter and would up digging everything out and removing the 'soil' and replacing it with something else. I found that it just could not hold water after it dried out and the plants were suffering. Since then, Ive mixed my own soil mixes and used my native soil as the base component. Ill mix in some 1/4" minus or pumice to get it draining better. I even have one raised planter that is pure 1/4" minus. After trying to grow and killing so many ice plants I cant even count, I gave up. They just burnt out in the summer no matter what I did. Not to say it can be done, I jut am not the one to do it. I think of them as annuals here. Ive killed some crassula too so Im not the best one to comment on those. Maybe looking into plants that have caustic sap or some other forms of natural protection from the bunnies would help (like euphorbia).

I usually just lurk in this forum. I just love to see what you all are organizing. I was lucky enough to be born with the extra organization gene and I donÂt mean that in a good way. I really think itÂs a curse but I have always been this way just as my mother was. My sister on the other hand couldnÂt organize a drawer if you paid her. Anyways this made me laugh. Just a few weeks ago I was cleaning out the linen closet and decided the time had finally come to get rid of the Raggedy Ann and Andy and towels. I packed then up and sent them to my daughter with her birthday gift. If I remember correctly I bought them when her father and I bought our first house. It was just before her first birthday. She just turned 46! Boy do I wish they still made towels like that. They still looked brand new and they were used by DD for several years and used again when DGS was little. I also have the scrap book from the 50Âs and early 60Âs plus the album of wedding pictures from my first husband, her father, and I havenÂt been married to him for almost 40 years. I could give them to her now but when my GS was little he didnÂt want to hear anything about my DH not being his grandpa. He is almost 23 and I think he could handle it now.

my sheets are washed and changed weekly as well. It wasn't a perspiration problem, it was a problem of a not so great washer, and the need to use biofriendly detergent, as originally stated. Anyway, today I happily soaked my white bar cloths today (washer was free of workers) &soaked them in the Persil & oxiwhite. Almost EVERYTHING came out of them! Hooray. They were looking not so good despite regular washings. Thank you for all your help! I'm not sure I can go back to "green" laundry products after this. And I am a believer of such things. my sheets are a beautiful thick crisp all cotton. I love them. I know I can get the rest out, its minimal compared to what it was. I should've taken a before/after shot, but it was too embarrassing!

Hi all, thanks so much for all the incredible advice! Having read way too late into the night on more than one occasion, I took a relatively short list down to a local nursery to see what they had in stock. Turns out they had quite a few from our list, so we looked at which ones looked the best and then picked out 3 to have delivered: Fruitless Mulberry, California Live Oak, and Ficus Nitida "Green Gem." Hooray! The order came today, and of course, there always has to be a hiccup... instead of the California Live Oak, it seems they brought a Holm Oak: Quercus Ilex. Needless to say, I'm bummed. Question for all those experienced folks here is, how bummed should I be? I've only just started reading up on this new species, and the fact that it's not really a CA native already has me quite disappointed, but it does look like as a Mediterranean tree it might do okay in our climate. Does anyone have any experience with it? Our landscaper is coming tomorrow to plant the trees and hook up dedicated irrigation to them to give them a good start. I'm not sure if we should try to get the nursery to correct their error before he comes, or if the Quercus Ilex might fit our needs. Thanks so much for any advice... and for helping us get this far!

oh I'm cool with it, compared to the worse things that have and can happen it is only stuff..that is basically what i told him..but when it happens to him nearly daily (hurting himself or other stuff) it gets hard for him to take.

I just laugh it off and go on, most of the time..see he has broken his breastbone, 2 fingers and hurt himself in other ways..back, etc..just in the past 2 weeks..this is kinda normal as he is very accident prone, drs say cause of the head injury and meds..but this also was lack of sleep, he sometimes goes up to 4 days without sleep think he was on 2 when he hit the door

so we tried to save money..headaches....
