Too late (hot) to aerate?

I have been looking into renting a coring aerator to help my lawn. Soil is largely clay and quite compacted due to years of lawn games and such so many of the grass roots are not deep in the soil and actually on top of it (thatch if I understand that term correctly from reading other posts). Anyway the main question is, is it to hot to aerate and will doing so actually hurt my lawn more than help it? I know is should wait till it cooler in the fall but I won't be around then to work on it. I'm in the Willamette Valley in Oregon so not super dry but it is getting to be mid 80's some days with little rain. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!
