odd problem, sections of grass bend over and die

I have a number of patches of some odd sort of grass in my lawn. While it the spring it seems indistinguishable from the KBG, about a month ago it seems to begin to lie over and smother any other grass under it. By about mid June, the 'bent' grass has died itself, leaving largely dead patches in the lawn. It will regrow next spring and restart the cycle.

What is this stuff and how to fight it? Should I cut up and reseed these patches in the fall? Or do I need to dig the plant roots out entirely first to avoid regrowing. Can small patches be treated with something to inhibit its growth and allow the KBG to take over?

Most of these patches are in partial shade. My lawn is on the dry side, never overwater and use corn gluten and compost for fertilizer - never chemicals.
