Comments (29)The blade is supposed to be close to the edge. 1/4" is about the max clearance I'd want to see on a mower, and may be too much. Something has to be wrong. I've never seen clippings build up on the cutting edge of a blade. The vibration comes from the blade build-up which naturally is not exactly even on both sides of the blade, throwing off the balance. I can't see build-up between the end of the blade and the deck getting bad enough to affect anything - the blade certainly clears it's own way around the deck. Build-up over the blade definitely will bog down the mower. I had that problem on a Honda with the twin blade system. I got some relief by removing the upper blade. Again, having essentially the same mower but with steel deck, I haven't seen any of these effects with an Insight. I cut Saturday morning, and it was misting and started to lightly rain as I was about halfway through. I was mulching about 1/2" to 3/4" and was fully expecting problems, but the mower never got a build-up or threw any clumps or matted clippings. The grass in my front yard is quite thick. Something is just not right with your mower. I would not grind anything off the ends of the blade, either. I wish I could get my hands on that mower to take a look at it. I'm thinking defective or improperly-installed blade or perhaps some abnormality in the deck. If it turns out to be something in the design of the mower, they will have to fix that fast. Comments (1)the ohv Briggs intek pro has a cast iron sleeve that will take more abuse than the aluminum bore models. The carburetor is easier to service than the Honda carburetor. This engine weighs about 5 pounds more than the Honda. Primer equipped engine usually start with 2 - 3 pulls - until you learn best primer operation. If the engine is equipped with an oil filter, be aware, the engine has filtered oil and splash lubrication. This engine has about 190 CC. The Honda is a great 1 pull starter. Comments (13)What about Snapper, they have 2 different walk behind mower lines now. Their top of the line seems nearly identical to mowers they were making decades ago. Everything seems old time heavy duty. Which leads to a few big positives. Reliable proven design, dependable, and when yo do need a part chances are it will be available. (A problem I had with a 10 yr old Murray, sure those generic parts are available at big retailers, as well as some parts for more recent models, but they like to keep you buying new equipment every few years.) Plus they are mostly sold at dealers who are also service shops. When you need your mower serviced, the big retailer wont be the one you bring it to. Look at many of the mowers they have discounted in their discount area. Usually the ones returned for one reason or another often with the sticker of the local repair shop that serviced the machine. Snappers other line is new and designed and priced to compete with mowers sold at the big retailers. Im not sure about the dependability, but if you are using them with different teen operators and on Camp sized property with hills and such with enough area needed mow that two mowers would be needed to cut it quickly then it may be wise to purchase from an authorized service / dealer like Snapper. And the prices online at Snapper are suggested list only. When I got my new Snapper I had moved from a flat 7000 sq ft lawn to a sloped 20,000 sq ft lawn. Considering I had 3 times the amount of lawn, I definetly wanted self propelled, mulching, and a high quality motor. So I picked the old style Snapper mulching deck with the 6hp Kawasaki engine that is used on many commercial models for $599 , $100 under list without bargaining. If I had gone with the standard B&S engine it probably would have been closer to the price of the Deere yout mentioning since the mulch only B&S Snapper is listed at $499 and your planning to get two so you could probably get a nice deal. Ariens also makes a nice mower I was considering, but the Ariens dealer wasnt as close as my local Snapper dealer. Comments (6)I've patched my C21ZPRA magnesium deck with straps of aluminum from the hardware store. Most places I used flat head screws with nuts but in a few spots I couldn't drill through the housing, so I used self-drilling screws simply as self-tappers. So far it's working well. Finally managed to slightly bend the crankshaft extension. I'm able to set the blade so it doesn't vibrate. I replaced the spark plug when I was having starting problems last year, but the old plug is fine. Parts prices are insane. If they actually have any decks left, no one is going to pay over $500 for one. Let it go for $50, maybe someone would buy it. $275 for a crankshaft? Out of sight. Guess they're attached to this stuff; don't want to sell any? No one around here can weld magnesium. The stuff burns intensely if it is not welded with the right equipment and skill. Easy with the right stuff, mainly the correct filler rod and TIG, like aluminum. A shop that repairs old VW crankcases (magnesium, with some aluminum and zinc for strength) should be able to weld a Lawn-Boy magnesium deck. CO2 or water makes Mg burn more intensely as both have oxygen in them. Maybe if I ever get back out to Oregon with the mower I can get the VW specialist next door to my father in law's house to fix the deck.
