Ill conceived mowing?

I think I mow more to kill back the honeysuckle than take care of the grass, er green stuff that keeps the top soil in place.
Probably could have waited a day. Not sure the old Simplicity could have done it. The zero turn did good at not getting stuck as long as I did zero turning where the ground was soggy.

A different week's problem. It isnmore sensitive to bottoming out and destroying spindles than the old one.

My husband's Mother had several peonies and when she couldn't garden anymore, my Father in Law forgot they were there and mowed them repeatedly for several years. It wasn't till he was himself ill and couldn't mow the lawn that we discovered the peonies in the spring when they came up and bloomed! It may have set them back, but it sure didn't kill them! I dug one up for my own yard before the house was sold. It has sat in a pot with weeds and little soil all summer and still looks fine. These things are dang hard to kill once they have established.

I have had all my boys weaned at different times... My second one was weaned from breast to bottle at about 11 months. He would accept either breast or bottle of formula and not have a preference...Other than he could walk around with the bottle. :o) Your daughter will NOT suffer any ill affects if you chose to wean her now... Also too, with all mine, I was "fertile" again around 16 months, not any sooner that I knew of...my last one has just weaned at 19 months. ( He never would take a bottle or pacifier.) Eventually your fertility will return wether or not you are breastfeeding...I'd say if it hasn't yet, it will in the next few months...

My neighbors don't do diddily squat to their yard. Luckily, their paved driveway separates my yard from theirs. However, there is about 5-7 feet on "my side" of their driveway that they actually own. After getting sick of seeing 4 foot tall broadleaf weeds and grassy weeds in that spot, I took my weed eater to it. Since then, I've mower it a few times when my mowing my lawn. I may have "accidentally" over sprayed some weed killer and broadcast some pre-emergent (when I was treating my own lawn, of course). One day, I come home to find them outside, husband and wife, going to town on the at area with garden hoes and shovels. Ripping out thick weeds, tilling the soil, trimming their pathetic shrubs... ... And then, I noticed yesterday there is some grass seed there. I couldn't believe it. I think they started to get the picture; I was taking care of their stuff and they probably felt guilty. I don't have the heart to tell them that you don't plant grass in Central VA at this time of the year, and that they probably just overturned about a gazillion I'm sure they completely destroyed the pre-me barrier that I "accidentally" applied; however, it's almost time for another soon anyway. Meanwhile, my KBG is creeping on over there. I'm sure they will think it's the grass seed they planted, and I'm fine with that.

Plant Growth Regulator. Basically it slows down grass growth. Trinexapac for example will cut down your mowing by 50+%. Since it suppresses growth in shoot length, the plant puts its energy into growing sideways and downwards, making for deeper roots and a denser lawn. It also darkens the grass significantly. It also helps a lot with drought resistance in the summer because the plant uses less water. It's a great tool that golf courses have been using for many years, and it's penetrating residential market. It's a bit expensive, but it saves a lot of time on mowing. The problem with using the tractor is that it will tear up the new grass on turns. If that's the only option you have then avoid making sharp turns on the grass and make sure your blades are very sharp.

IN cases where the ground is very wet, I would mow, just before the HOA screams.

I have a couple of thoughts.
1. Always mow at the mower's highest setting unless you have bermuda, centipede, or creeping bentgrass. The grass will develop deeper roots which can grab resources like moisture and nutrients from deeper in the soil. Also the higher canopy helps to stop germination of weed seeds.
2. Never mow when the grass is wet. We grass clogs the blades and undercarriage of the mower.
3. Never mow when the soil is moist (wait several days after watering and/or a rain event). Wet and/or moist soil WILL compact when you drive or walk over it.

It was a bit dry late in the winter and we are making up for it. The last 3 weeks I have had similar experiences mowing down in the low spot.

This time since u know, the neighbors were home to help pull it out if I got stuck playing, instead of letting it grow or coming back with the trimmer, I was adventurous.

dchall_san_antonio, thank you for taking the time to compile the tips. You seem well versed on the matter.

Down low there where it can stay damp I have mostly one of the creeping grasses. So in agreement with your list it seems the summer sun and evaporation beats absorption.

If I am going for something different than the typical yard of monoculture do you have any advice?

Generally I want my yard to be green. If I catch a good spot of blooming whatever I might mow around it, or give the blue and yellow flowers their chance weather permitting.

However I MUST mow down the honeysuckle and grapevines before they spread.

This is a one off, 1950s house where my guess is they did not scalp the top soil (or do quite as good drainage work). Fertility is no problem. One year I round upped then tilled a 20x20 ft patch and planted pumpkins. Boy did they spread. The non runner, non tan in the winter grass that I have up the hill just came back magically.
