Robins going to town on my lawn

I've notice increased activity with red-breasted robins in our lawn. I know that over the past few years I've been able to increase my worm population - really trying to add organic matter, compost tea, trying to avoid chem fungicides, and for the most part, haven't used insecticides (although I've come close now and then.)

For the life of me I can't see what these birds are eating - but something is definitely getting their attention. I guess I'm just worried about grubs.

I plan to pull back the ol' 1 square foot of turf and see how grubs I might have underneath. Should I sleep safely at night if I don't see any? or less than X number?

I don't want to treat for grubs if I don't have to, and want to make sure I don't miss the diagnosis if I do have them before I allow any damage.

Thanks!
