Right now light doesn't matter. You can put it wherever you want to display the plant while its In bloom. Congratulations! I would advise against fertilizing at this point. You might think of nitrogen as the anti blooming chemical. In many plants, not just orchids, excess nitrogen will prevent blooming or at least dramatically reduce it. Wait until you see your plant in active growth making new roots and leaves to start fertilizing.

Having a lot of nitrogen will result in beautiful green plants but not many flowers. That's why people say not to use much. I agree, but what is *too much*? Is 10-10-10 too much N? Is 24-8-16 too much N? Is 30-10-10 too much? The fact is tomatos aren't 'special' plants in terms of their nutrient requirements. They use as much N as K and much less P than either, just like most plants grow for flowers/fruit. If we supply nutrients such that plants can't get as much N as K then regardless of how well the plants do, they would have done better if their need for N was met. Having a high amount of Phos in the soil will result in more vigorous blooming and increased growth. No, it won't. Call your extension service's soil testing dept and ask them how much P they recommend for a garden relative to N and K. It's much less. Look at modern research into plant nutrition and try to find a source that still believes high P results in anything other than water pollution and the potential for inducing minor nutrient deficiency (which, ironically, can induce early flowering from nutrient stress). There is *no plant on the planet* that *ever* under *any circumstances* will use more P than N or K. I made that last statement quite absolute as an invitation for those so inclined to attempt to prove it wrong and make me look like a fool. I think in one's quest to prove this statement wrong, a lot will be learned about plant nutrition and more than one commonly believed myth will be dispelled ;) The idea that N is for green growth, P for flowers and K for roots/overall health was wrong the day it was first said. It's wrong because it's too simplistic and fails to appreciate that like human nutrition, there isn't a single nutrient that does this thing and another single nutrient that does that thing. They all work together. It's like saying Vitamin A is for good eyesight, but that doesn't mean eating carrots until the skin turns orange is going to make a person not need glasses ;)

Thanks for the ideas Kas...and yes, I do tend toward "matchy-matchy"! I try to break away from it to do something "different" from time to time, but I it's difficult for me! I just talked to our KD and it turns out she did NOT recommend the full height...she also recommended only 4"-6" inches...our contractor misunderstood...she's going to call him and she wants me to tell him too so he doesn't mess up the electrical for that wall. Since I'm so undecided, she suggested that I get the 4"-6" backsplash but not cement it down. Then, live with it for awhile to see how I like it. If I decide I like it she'll get someone to cement it down, if I don't then it's easy to take down and maybe use for something else. Since it's such a small place, the granite backsplash will be less than 1 sq ft! Hmmm...as I study the sink elevation picture some more, I think I see where some of the confusion lies...here's a picture of my windows....the countertop will go straight in and be flush with the window itself... Yes, Raehelen I made the windows flush w/the counter! I fell in love with Fothia's window/sink and have used her picture as my inspiration ever since! In my case, I had to raise the window since it was originally only 22" off the floor! Here's what the window looks like right now... If you look closely, you can see the mark where the upper cabinets will end on the upper left wall.

Can you post more images of your space please? I’m going to try to talk you out of using flooring as any part of your backsplash by asking you to post an inspiration image that uses wood in part of a bs. I love the deep color, or you can easily go light, but ditch the flooring and choose a single tile you like. Aside from the fact that using the dark wood against light tile will look choppy, everyone will be able to tell it’s flooring from the other room. This is Fireclay Tile.
