Complicated backsplash question
So, we are doing a partial remodel of our kitchen damaged by a plumbing leak.
I'd like to get some advice on our backsplash. As you can see from the pics the range hood/chimney sits kind of off by itself (the cooktop will be underneath it, but it isn't installed yet). We like the idea of creating an accent wall on the wall with the oven cabinets using the wood plank in the picture (it is the flooring from the living area next to the kitchen). I don't want to run the wood plank behind the range since we cook a lot and I don't think it will hold up. Right now we are thinking about tiling behind the cooktop and blending it into the accent wall, then taking the tile around the rest of the kitchen. The granite counters go all the way around. (we have an octagon shaped kitchen)
2 Questions:
1. What tile would you use? Open to any suggestion, but prefer to keep it light.
2. How high up the wall would you tile behind the vent hood chimney?

I’m going to try to talk you out of using flooring as any part of your backsplash by asking you to post an inspiration image that uses wood in part of a bs. I love the deep color, or you can easily go light, but ditch the flooring and choose a single tile you like. Aside from the fact that using the dark wood against light tile will look choppy, everyone will be able to tell it’s flooring from the other room. This is Fireclay Tile.

Comments (21)Hi. We installed out kitchen in 2012. We still haven't chosen or decided on a backslpash - it's the painted wall. I have a creamy Egyptian marble, - don't remember the name. I like unstructured European vintage-y kitchens. Many of them don't have backsplashes either. My stainless range has a stainless backsplash directly behind it. I had picked out some mini-clear glass subway tile for the backsplash that coincidentally matches my Prescott Green paint color perfectly but what if I decide to change wall color one day? Just this week I started thinking maybe I made my backsplash tile decision three years ago which was to have none. Our marble installers tried very hard to discourage us from marble in the kitchen but I have not regretted it. All those kitchens in southern Europe can't be wrong. Comments (3)Most times we do not apply a spacer there, we use the backsplash as a support. But make sure this is level before doing this, otherwise you will have uneven tile at the wall cab! Comments (23)cigi, in our last house the previous owner installed tumbled marble in a mauvish tone which IMO looked awful with the St Cecilia granite. Even though the tile was expensive, I tore them off and left the 4" granite backsplash, patched and painted the rest of the wall. The sink was the only working area as the cooktop was on the island. No problem with water as I used BM Aura, but Pittsburgh Paint's Manor Hall Timeless is just as good with a more flat look and lifetime warranty. I'm pondering the issue for my current redo. In various houses I've had paint, wallpaper, white tile with abalone inserts, plain white tile. Right now I'm weighing white tile with a beautiful insert, just paint with no granite backsplash since this area has only a counter but no cooking/wet functions, paint with granite backsplash, or a simple glass tile backsplash with listello over it a la Chinchette. I'm attaching a photo from Chinchette's beautiful kitchen (hope she doesn't mind seeing hers cited as a great example) which shows the last option. In any event, I echo others' advice to not worry about that decision immediately unless you absolutely love a certain look. Just use good paint. Comments (25)didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )...See More

The cooktop goes under the vent hood. The granite guys are in the middle of installing. They haven't cut the opening yet.

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoFor the bs tile, if you decide to go with an off white, it really has to match the color of the cabinets, or at least be close to it. The only way you’ll know if you have the correct color is to bring tiles into your home and look at them in your own light. If you’re going to go neutral and light, but not white, pick a color from your granite. Again, this is Fireclay Tile, and I’d take it up to the hood.

4 years agoAh ok. I would go glossy off white subway tile and keep it below the hood Like this. I would take it over to the cabinet with the stove.
