Bayer weed killer impossible to spray!

I can't believe I'm trying it again this year, but I guess it's because of the success I had last year in killing weeds with Bayer All-In-One Weed Killer.

Here's my problem. I use a Ortho hose sprayer and whatever is in the Bayer mix clogs up the screen in the bottom of the pickup hose and it's almost impossible for me to spray.

Does anyone have a fix for this problem? Last year, I ened up diluting it with water then setting the spray bottle to 6oz/gallon to get it to work. It worked, but I have no idea at what rate I'm applying because I just keep spraying over a given area of about 10K sq/ft until it's all gone.

The directions SPECIFICALLY state that you are not to use this product with a hose end sprayer. It is in BOLD lettering on the label. You will need to obtain a pump sprayer, and then you can mix and apply this product according to the directions.

READ THE DIRECTIONS.

I'm a freaken moron! You know, I looked over the direction a few times and all I was was the temps to not us in.

I guess it's time for me to purchase another spray tank or switch back to WBG. The only reason I use this is because how well it worked last year, even with the problem spraying it with the hose end sprayer.

Is your grass growing yet? If so then fertilize now and in 2 weeks try spraying the weeds again. Try to wait until the grass is growing or else you are only fertilizing the weeds. Weeds seem to die better when well fertilized and healthy.

Double post, bumping this one down. I just used the Bayer on Monday and the dandelions were shriveling up the next day and they look dead now. I also used a hose end sprayer even though the directions say not to. I'm not happy with the results as the clover and other ground cover like weeds are still alive. I'll give it another week and spot spray with a pump sprayer.

Thanks for the follow up dchall. I live in eastern nc. Out of the last 30 days it has rained 20 of them. Pretty good rain at that. Probably 8 inches or more. I try to cut my grass every 4/5 days weather permitting. I can't really cut lower than 2 inches without scalping in a lot of places. I'm in the process of leveling out my lawn. I've been reading all of your advise on the subject. I've been trying to find the list where the guy leveled his yard and it showed his contraption he pulled behind his lawn tractor. I can't find it anywhere. If any one has a link I'd appreciate it. Back to the button weed. I fertilize my lawn every month but every time I do we get a bunch of rain days after. I've only lived here 4 months. House been empty for two years prior. My fertilize guy sold me some triplet to spot spray on the weed and it work kinda. Hurts the grass a little too. But it is spreading out of my control. That is why I'm looking to use a hose end sprayer for a larger application. Any help would be Appricated. Thanks.

I just checked their website, and you shouldn't use it on KBG, PR, or TTTF if it's over 80 and not on Bermuda or Zoysia if it's over 90. Since it kills some grasses, you can't use it all on some. I think by less severe, you mean that it doesn't kill all the grass. However, RU dissipates very quickly. You can seed within days of applying RU, but you need to wait 3-4 weeks after applying the Bayer Advanced.

2 things it could be:

1. insolubles in the mix (ie gravel, leaves, twigs)

2. precipitates (ever made sugar "rock" candy?)

In the first case you would need to either use a pump sprayer or filter prior to using it. Something like a coffee filter should work depending on how thick this stuff is.

In the second case a MILD heating of the mixture should re-dissolve the precipitates back into solution. I'd get a big bucket and fill it with hot water, and then let the weed killer bottle sit in it for an hour or so. Then gently mix the liquid with some end-over-end. Try it out now in your hose-end sprayer. If it was just precip's it should work fine. If it was insolubles it will need to be filtered.

Or just go buy the proper equipment. :)

Folks, I went and bought a cheap pump sprayer. Now if this doesn't work, I'll have to switch to a different weed killer.

All I can say is that it sucks to drag a hose around a acre lot. I can also tell you that it's a PITA to keep pumping a pump sprayer. This I know from spraying my fruit trees.

Well I'm a worse moron because I read the instructions before buying it and used a hose end sprayer anyway, an Ortho dial-a-spray set to the rate recommended on the package. Thought I would take the chance. It dispensed half a bottle of product evenly over my front yard. No problems with clogging. I did shake the sprayer frequently to keep whatever solids are in there mixed up.

The back yard I did with the same sprayer, using half a bottle of Ortho Weed B Gone Max at the recommended rate. The Bayer seems to be working a little faster but both seem to be doing the job. My weeds this year are oxalis and spurge, with a few dandelions.

If you have no luck with spraying the Bayer through the hose end sprayer I would get the Weed B Gone. I can't imagine doing an acre with a pump sprayer. You will get a lot of exercise.

crabjoe - if you have a tractor or similar, you could buy one ot those pull behind spray models with the boom attachment for in-close work. Theyre are becoming more price friendly.
