Need step by step plan on how to fix lawn

Ive been lurking around several lawn care message boards for a couple of months and have found this to be the most informative and knowledgeable. I need major help to get my lawn up to speed. I bought a home last summer which yard was totally neglected. I live in Lithonia, GA(ATL suburb) and have what I think is a bermuda lawn. I did some what I now have read are some dumb things like adding "Patchmaster"(which doesnt go dormant) to cover up bare spots and watering lightly every day. Can some one please give me a step by step plan on how you would try to salvage this lawn.

OH, I have a old rotary mower. I had the blades sharpened. Its red clay soil. I did areate last summer. I put down Max fireant killer about a month ago. I fertilized with Scotts Southern Turf Builder about 2 weeks ago. There is a small tree(which I love btw) where there is thinning grass under it. The lawn does get full sunlight most of the day. I dont have the cash to resod the whole lawn.
