advice on first steps to trying to fix front yard lawn

currently rent a house in champaign, illinois. we will be here 5+ years, no plans to move before then. first time living in a home, before this it was always apartments.

would like some help trying to get the lawn back up to order. i know it will take some time and some effort. i am completely new to yard work.

first, the front yard has a lot of bald spots. some moss, even. because of the tree (i have not yet figured out what kind of tree is there, but thats another side project for this spring/summer when leaves come out) there is a bit of shade. so i think my first step should be to get the soil tested? or no? some other step?

i would just like some idea of what a first step might be. I'm sure that different people have different ideas, so ms x's first steps might be different from mr y's. any help would be greatly appreciated.

maybe even before soil testing, i need to figure out what kind of grass is here. or what kind of grass might be good for here. (again, champaign, illinois.)

thanks in advance for any help in establishing my first steps!

i guess i might also add that i am not opposed to chemical fertilizers down the line, or even at the start, but i would prefer organic methods but i wonder if im even getting ahead of myself. i need to have a lawn to fertilize.

dont know if this is dead or dormant. and there is some moss there at the top edge of the photo.

the above is a photo of the yard covering the area closest to the entire front of the house. dead or dormant patches of grass, some moss and a large bald spot. near the left edge you can see an exposed tree root.

The grass definitely will take some many community suggestions for what to do next, but at least for the tree, I could suggest that while it is still dormant, it is a good time to prune it. You can still prune throughout the year (especially to remove unwanted new growth) but even without knowing the type of tree yet, pruning it is still OK.

Just read up on the pruning procedures or methods and if you have any questions, feel free to ask again about that. For example, some things to consider when pruning: remove branches growing inwards to the center of the tree and downwards towards the ground. There are more "rules" about which branches are candidates for removal, so give it a try and enjoy the yard work!

You can use those rules for many plants, so not only the tree but any other bushes or twiggy plant in your yard are now able to be pruned with what you learned for the tree.

The good grass remaining is Kentucky bluegrass. The brown looking grass would be KBG that went dormant over the winter, but it should be coming back by now. Since it is not I'm guessing it was weakened by the shade from all those trees. KBG was a good choice until the trees started casting shade on it in the summer. It will never be nice as a strict KBG lawn. That leaves fescue and your only grass possibility unless you want to take down the trees.

Now is a bad time to plant new grass but a lot of people do it. Those are the people who complain in July that they have a full crabgrass lawn. That's what happens if you seed new grass in the spring. You get all the summer weeds. If you want to nurse this lawn through the summer, then late August is the best time to seed the fescue.

So what are your thoughts?

Should I round up and plant seed? Sprigs? Sod? What should I do next month in May? I dont want to pull the neighborhood down by having a crap lawn. Here's a step-by-step plan: 1) Water deeply & infrequently. Deeply means at least in inch of irrigation, the goal being to get moisture down 8" to 10" deep in the soil. Infrequently means no more often than once a week in the heat of summer & about once a month in the cooler months. You want the top of the soil to completely dry out between waterings helping to kill off shallow rooted weeds. 2) Mow frequently at the lowest setting on your mower. If your mower will mow the grass down to 1 inch, then mow when the grass gets up to 1-1/2" (no higher than that.) Mowing this frequently will encourage bermuda's horizontal growth & thickening, while discouraging many weeds as well as help to avoid scalp/swirl marks in your lawn. 3) Fertilize every 30 to 45 days throughout the growing season (from now til fall) with a fertilizer only product (avoid weed-n-feed products.) What fertilizer you use is less inportant than steps 1 & 2 above, but I personally prefer organic & use feed grains, specifically soybean meal once a month during the growing season & a single app of alfalfa pellets once each spring & fall. If you don't want to use feed grains, then the next best thing would be to use some 34-0-0 urea slow release fertilizer. 4) Buy a Weed Hound to remove the few weeds you have there. You shouldn't need any round up to remove that other grass you planted, the heat of summer coupled with the cultural practices I outlined here will have that bermuda crowding it out in no time. 5) Mulch under your trees out to the dripline of the trees & install some sort of edge border also if you'd like. You could perhaps find some flowers or groundcover that suits your taste that enjoy the shade your trees provide. (You already know the bermuda doesn't do well under there.) Follow these steps & let us know how it looks at the end of summer, I think you'll like the results. Good day, Dan

Is there any hope that I can turn this lawn around this summer? Hope springs eternal and all that. Yes, you can absolutely make improvements over summer. No, it's not going to become perfect. Weed and feed was a pretty good start, although most of us don't like it. The weed part goes to work immediately, but it would be better if it waited a week for the feed bit to get moving. The feed bit takes a while to make the weeds grow, which is when they're most sensitive to dying. First, mow high. As high as you can stand, or the top deck of the mower. It'll encourage the grass to spread (if it's a spreading type like KBG and some fescues). Longer grass shadows out weeds, too, and requires less water. Water rarely (once a week tops, twice in brutally hot weather) for 1" at a time, or half an inch if you go twice a week. You can lay out a tuna can or cans to determine the depth. Feed in May, September, October, and November if you use synthetics. If you decide on Milorganite (a good product), then either the same or even more often. Spring seedings, particularly this late, usually fail. For a good spring seeding the seed should have been down before the weather began to turn and your grass started to green up. You can still seed, but expect very heavy losses in summer. For this year, limp through and plan to seed on Labor Day weekend. Baby that through September, feed well, and it'll start to take over by next year.

Not mowing at day 50 with Kentucky bluegrass is not abnormal. The stuff goes into Sprout and Pout after it sprouts up and works on its root mass. I wasn't mowing all that much by the end of the first season myself, and I planted early. If you haven't fed since sprout (or not at all), a half-rate feeding wouldn't be a bad idea. Then feed at full rate when the growth on surrounding lawns stop, but yours is still green (a normal winterization, in other words, just timed on other people's lawns).

PNW grass blends will be cool season grasses such as perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescue, tall fescue, annual ryegrass, and intermediate ryegrass. Avoid the KGB - it is not recommended for use in western Washington due to disease concerns and the fact that it does not thrive in our low light levels, cool soils and winter wet. It is used much more heavily for lawns east of the Cascades, which have quite different growing conditions. The various seeds are blended in proportions that either accent or accommodate various growing conditions - heavier on the perennial ryegrass for high traffic, sunny conditions; fine fescues for shadier conditions and light traffic; tall fescue for drought tolerance (an issue in our very dry summers); annual or intermediate ryegrass for fast germination when seeding or overseeding and to aid establishment of the other grass types before weeds can take over Most retail nurseries and independent garden centers will have these grass blends in stock, typically from local seed vendors, and they do tend to be labeled as I described previously for conditional usage - shade blend, playground blend, premium blend, etc. Repeating the process in fall is optional, not a requirement. It depends on how well the spring process of rejuvenation or overseeding has taken. Sometimes bringing back a lawn does take attention in both spring and again in fall. But not always ;-) And the dead moss can be left in place until you can get to it. You just want to make sure it is removed before you start on the rest of the process.

that sounds simple. ill look into getting fescue seed.

okay. ill nurse this lawn through the summer and seed fescue in august.

so nursing means trying to keep on top of the weeds (really, the lawn isnt that large, so i think this is doable) and watering whatever i have that is green deeply and infrequently. correct?

ill plan on that. ill pull out those weeds in the strip as well and try to keep it bare over the summer till august.

im not in any rush. i just want to do my best to try to have the yard looking better than what it looks like now.

Deep infrequent watering is just short of a miracle cure for a lot of people.

Mow it relatively high - at least half way up your mower's notches. I would go all the way to the top but others disagree.
