Do I just need to step away from the plans?

I'm waiting for demo to start in a couple of weeks. Install of cabs/counter is scheduled for the 1st week of May! I've been planning this for over a year, and as many of you know and experienced, a great amount of free time is spent on this kitchen planning. I think I have most of the decisions made. Think.

So, during this waiting period I find myself with "free time" and reanalyzing the plan. We are having Shaker style frameless cabs: birch stained "Wild Cherry." I want to avoid too many right angles in the kitchen, so I have brought curves in with the handles, the range hood, the faucet (Grohe K4), and arched bases in the hutch and sink cabinet (and maybe in the baking area).

We are removing this wall between the kitchen and D.R., as well as enlarging the passthrough, and eliminating the step-up of the passthru. I am now wondering if, instead of totally removing the kitchen to DR wall, if I should retain part of the wall and have it made into an arch -- the same for the pass through -- should I have an arched opening there as well? Here is the passthrough: the cabinet to the right (the one with the handy knife rack) will be gone, and the cabs above the sink -- gone. The sink will basically be in the same position. The pass thru will be one level

In considering these arches, am I overthinking the curved lines a bit? Do I need to step away from the plans and take up a new hobby for the next few weeks? I think my husband is happy to be out of town while we wait so that he's missing my constant bombardment of questions.

Oh, and here's the current floor plan. It isn't exact yet, my cab maker will meet with me to discuss changes (seems that he's used to people making changes as they wait . . . .). Tall dishdrawer is gone, replaced with another bank of drawers.

I don't know what you have the area slated for, but I wonder about getting a prep sink down along the baking run. You have room for it. It woudl be by the frig too so that would be functional.

wwhy are uppers on the lower right different depths?

LS in the upper left corner?

what is the white area where it says 'prep zone'? just a blank out for the word type to show?

I'd double, triple and quadruple check that lower right door width...

having range or c*ooktop? if c*ooktop, where's oven(s)?

i think a partial wall on the DR end/cab run would be a good thing.

no windows in it?

Should I round up and plant seed? Sprigs? Sod? What should I do next month in May? I dont want to pull the neighborhood down by having a crap lawn. Here's a step-by-step plan: 1) Water deeply & infrequently. Deeply means at least in inch of irrigation, the goal being to get moisture down 8" to 10" deep in the soil. Infrequently means no more often than once a week in the heat of summer & about once a month in the cooler months. You want the top of the soil to completely dry out between waterings helping to kill off shallow rooted weeds. 2) Mow frequently at the lowest setting on your mower. If your mower will mow the grass down to 1 inch, then mow when the grass gets up to 1-1/2" (no higher than that.) Mowing this frequently will encourage bermuda's horizontal growth & thickening, while discouraging many weeds as well as help to avoid scalp/swirl marks in your lawn. 3) Fertilize every 30 to 45 days throughout the growing season (from now til fall) with a fertilizer only product (avoid weed-n-feed products.) What fertilizer you use is less inportant than steps 1 & 2 above, but I personally prefer organic & use feed grains, specifically soybean meal once a month during the growing season & a single app of alfalfa pellets once each spring & fall. If you don't want to use feed grains, then the next best thing would be to use some 34-0-0 urea slow release fertilizer. 4) Buy a Weed Hound to remove the few weeds you have there. You shouldn't need any round up to remove that other grass you planted, the heat of summer coupled with the cultural practices I outlined here will have that bermuda crowding it out in no time. 5) Mulch under your trees out to the dripline of the trees & install some sort of edge border also if you'd like. You could perhaps find some flowers or groundcover that suits your taste that enjoy the shade your trees provide. (You already know the bermuda doesn't do well under there.) Follow these steps & let us know how it looks at the end of summer, I think you'll like the results. Good day, Dan

A filter is always a good thing if you have one. That said, I don't use any filtration on my 1000 gallon pond. Like you, I pump the water from the pond up into an upper pool that feeds back down into the pond. I have lily on the bottom, some oxygenating plants that I rubber band to a rock and throw in (these are important to compete with algae. I use Hornwort that I get from a fish store for cheap), and some various floating plants and marginals. I have a koi, a bluegill, and several rosey reds in there that have all done well, overwintered and are thriving. The key is balance. I can get by without filtration because my fish load is small and I concentrate mostly on plants and water movement. I rarely, if ever, feed my fish and, because of that, I'm not introducing excess nutrients that could foul the water or lead to crazy algae blooms. Some people really want that interaction with fish so they will want to feed regularly. Nothing wrong with that. Each person has certain things that they want to get out of their pond. It's all about finding what works best for your goals and situation. My advice would be to make sure there is some shade in the pond to prevent the water from getting too hot this summer, get your plants in there first and then a couple goldfish and give the pond a month to go through the nitrogen cycle and get balanced, then slowly add some more goldfish and see how your system does. Hi everyone! It's been raining in Scotland this weekend. Yesterday went to a motor show and froze my tail off with high winds...I was starving (think it's getting on to that TOM...I am always hungry before it starts. Doubt I have lost any weight but I am comfortable in my current reduced clothes. I know I ate too much yesterday - too much. Another week of good eating and yesterday - oh oh! Struggling but not giving up. Today going for a walk to the garden centre - ran out of compost and have a ton of seed packets so needless to say will be placing another delivery order. Might drag my wheely bag with me and get some smaller bags of compost that I can drag home...and of course if there are any plants that need to be rescued! Today is a new day and I have to get outdoors, get moving and get planning some soup for the next few days, get some lighter meats out and have some yogurt. Really did not want to post yesterday after everything...I felt so bad about myself afterwards but this morning I thought - get yourself back on the board, be honest, get it off my chest and get moving today. I have lost 14 - 17 pounds which puts me at the halfway point of my overall goal and struggling to get things moving. Here we go - glad to read everyone is still sticking with it and making progress. No matter how small the steps are they still put us one step ahead of where we were. Looking forward to the garden centre, going to get moving and scrubbing things today. Biggest challenge next week - staying active mentally at work - some days are boring and I could munch all day - so I drink lots of water and go to the loo a lot. Have a fabby day today! McPeg

Your pictures don't show much in the way of surroundings, so it's not possible to gauge what else the problem could possibly mean. But I doubt it is more than the common settling that is seen around foundations over the course of years. It looks like the steps have sunk more than the adjacent walk. The fix is either to have it jacked and support placed underneath (a process called mud-jacking) or to demolish it, compact the supporting soil well, and then rebuild a new steps, or steps and walk. Obviously, the latter option will be more expensive. However, it's a small job so might be relatively costly for the mud-jacking process. You just have to contact mudjackers and get prices to know where you stand on that. The mud referred to in mud-jacking is a concrete mortar mix. But a newer version of this process uses polyurethane foam. You might watch some Youtube videos of the process and see if it's something you could take a stab at (of course using home-spun solutions) as a DIY project. The jacking is done using conventional hydraulic and mechanical jacks and the mud or foam is squirted into the cavity created when the concrete is jacked back into position. A couple cans of Great Stuff might be enough to pull this off. If not, you'd be back at square one with little lost.

If you want some security, get out the blue tape, tape out your plan right over your existing kitchen and walk through it doing pretend cooking.

Thanks for your responses -- I can relate to the late night/early morning GW'ers. I just happened to sleep last night!

Remodelfla: We considered a prep sink in that very spot. However, on the other side of my current sink is where my kids hang -- doing homework, on the computer, etc. I'm putting in a 45" Kohler stages, and enlarging that passthrough will allow me to interact more with whoever is in that room while I'm prepping. Also, that spot gives me a view into the back yard -- our house is 3 rooms deep, the kitchen is in the middle. I also don't want to give up additional drawer space with a prep sink.

Desertsteph: The cabs are at a different depth, because my microwave is going to be there, 15" up off of the counter. Then my cookie sheets will be on top of that. The cab next to it will be 14" deep, to hold my pot and pan lids. Here's the elevation of that wall. I have a 30" range on that wall. And yes, that whited out Prep zone area is a result of my photobucket skills. And that is a super susan in the corner.

The kitchen is in the middle of the house, so there aren't any windows in in. Enlarging the passthru will give me the ability to look outside thru the adjoing room.

And Bmore -- I've used so much masking tape in this planning, and have made my family honor the boundaries of the tape so much -- for awhile my housekeeper couldn't wait to come in and see what the latest configuration was. Rolls have been used, as well as boxes!

But how about those arches?

I am not so fond of arches or pass throughs, I don't think they age well, though it may depend on the style of your house. Most people seem to prefer an open plan nowadays. Good luck, you have certainly put a lot of thought into your plans!
