Day 10 - No seedlings Yet!

Ok guys, tell me the grass seed will eventually pop. I check everyday when I come home from work and I have nothing up yet. I was hoping the perenial rye (I used a mix of fescure, PR, and KGB and used starter fert) would be up by now to hold in the other seeds.

It has been a wet 10 days here in Northern VA - perfect watering conditions since the rains have been light. But we have had little sun and it has been a little colder than normal. We have april showers coming this weekend and I can see the seeds out there - will they stick if we get heavier rains..

Did you roll the seed down? Are they embedded into the surface of the soil? They should be.

I wouldn't give up on those seedlings. They do not look that bad, and you say you only have 4 weeks left....so hold tight to them:) Now onto your issues...the purpling color could be coming from temperatures. Not sure what they are experiencing, but once you'll get them out they'll be fine....and I don't see that much purple on your pictures. Your watering regime seems fine...just make sure the cups are light feeling, and that you aren't going by what the surface looks like....that could be very deceiving and cause some issues with cold/wet, then that causing the purpling. We fertilize our seedlings minimally...only with fish emulsion....we don't want them going crazy in their temporary homes....and we don't want them giving oodles of vegetative growth. You might be seeing a nutrient overload happening...esp. with the 10-10-10 applications. And finally, some varities have very, very wispy foliage. I am not familiar with those you are growing....but alot of paste tomatoes have droopy foliage....somewhat like they would be lacking water. Hope this helps... m

I did it for four or five years. The trees I got then mostly were not much more than dormant whips or sticks...and I had a perennial house in which to pot them and baby them a bit until they were old enough to withstand planting out. I had decent success rate, especially if you consider them essentially 'freebies' but found that they are marked with some paint, and sometimes the markings are not even visible or questionably so. A few each year had no visible roots and/or croaked. My daughter ordered some last year and planted hers out directly with a good success rate, but they looked like a lot better specimens than they used to send. I did have problems with this source, however, when I ordered fruit trees. I paid for full dwarf trees, and not a one of them are, nor even semi-dwarf. They are all standards. This presented a problem in that they ended up spaced too close for their size, and it also takes a standard tree longer to bear. I also ordered two seckle pears, and ended up with ornamental bradford pears and it took me five years for them to fruit to find out.

Well I could see it trying to open for the past few days and this morning this is what I have, it looks like it might be a striped and a mini. Though its really hard to tell, it is spotted a little and has alot of white streaks so I will have to wait and see with the next few blooms. The fragrance is very strong too.

You can try reducing the light intensity by raising the light a bit. Probably best to not reduce the time the light is on but I'm not sure where this cactus is native and the season it prefers to grow. As long as it is growing I wouldn't worry much about it. Colorful cacti seedlings aren't unusual and aren't unhealthy.

Yes - the lawn was rolled after seeding. It is really warming up over the next few days hopefully that will make things pop.

I can tell that the existing grass is starting to grow - but I am most concerned about the bald spots where I must get grass growing so the county dirt police will accept it. In those areas - I can see a tiny amount of sprouting and a lot of seeds. Many of the seeds look to be secured in with a light film of dirt. Some are just sitting up on top of the dirt.

I see on highway construction projects when I drive in to work how they seed and straw and the grass seems to grow quickly even when it is cold out. I was expecting that kind of result with the rye grass - not the fescue or KGB in the mix. Is the rye as sensitive to ground temp as the other seeds?

Day 12 and we have seedlings popping like crazy. It was the temp change.

Yep, same here (although it's around Day 90 for me as I dormant seeded in January).
