Zombie Lawn (horrible looking lawn)

I'm in Southern California, and have been living in this home for about 8 years. Recently a family member got a new car, so there's 3 cars in our 2 car parking spot. So one of the cars has to drive over a portion of the lawn, this has destroyed that one part of lawn. So, where the cars drive over the lawn, it's now compacted dirt, and where cars have not driven on. Is not turning into a Brown and green color. Now my question is, (if this type of question has not been answer already) is, what should I start doing in order to bring life back to the lawn? I think i would need to puncture the ground and churn it a little bit before i could replant anything in there, but i'm not sure how, or with what, then I'm not sure what to do with it after that, as in replanting and that sort of thing.

Thanks
