With only 5 plants you won't get many at all. Sorry. Best guess - 20-30 pods. Production all depends on the weather and the specific growing conditions the individual gardener provides. As already mentioned, yours are very late for your zone and at 5' tall should have already been producing for some time so the conditions they are growing in has some sort of issues. Peas are one of the crops that require so many plants (and take up so much room in the garden) to produce a sufficient harvest that many gardeners pass on growing them. Dave

thanks you everyone again. I thought it might be the location too. They are in the least sunny corner of my garden (but I put them in that corner so they could run out and not get in the way of the other plants). But it does gat a decent bit of sun, somewhere between 4-6 hours I think (I'm usually not around during the day, and so don't actually see them till late afternoon). I don't really fertalize my garden except for composting in between the rows. It is also possible that I put them a little too close together (though they're not that close), but I can't really remember the planting directions. I will snap the photos, get some opinions, and either plant them in a differnet location or try a different type of cucumber. Thanks everyone! Rebecca

Well, there really isn't one "right or wrong" answer, since it sort of depends on what you are looking for. I personally believe that longer canes, while floppy and less easy to manage, give somewhat higher yields. BUT, it's awfully nice to top them at around 4 to 4 1/2 feet, then pinch the tips out of the laterals when they're about 12-15 inches long, to get nice, upright, mostly self-supporting canes. So, I guess the answer is "somewhere between 4 and 6 feet seems to be the normal method."

Well, that all depends! How long are they, first? You can tip the laterals, which will then also branch...so, you can see how this will increase your fruiting area. However, if your planting is really dense already, I don't think I'd do that. You might end up with too much vegetative growth, which will limit air flow and result in more problems with fungal diseases next year. If you don't thip them, you'll definitely want to prune them back to 12-18" during the growing season. Most growers probably choose this method. Maybe take a small section and tip the laterals, and see which way you like it better next year.
