first sugar snap pea...delicious. how many can i expect?

my daughter picked and ate our one mature sugar snap pea today and she loved it. i can see about 6-8 more flowers/pods forming. but when can i expect a nice harvest? i have about 5 plants/vines growing. they're about 5 feet tall and were planted about 2 months ago.

we have been harvesting our sugar snap peas, planted in mid march for weeks now. In fact the plants probably close to 50 are starting to look spent. I must say you must have put them in late. Hopefully your harvest will besoon or the heat will do them in.

With only 5 plants you won't get many at all. Sorry. Best guess - 20-30 pods. Production all depends on the weather and the specific growing conditions the individual gardener provides. As already mentioned, yours are very late for your zone and at 5' tall should have already been producing for some time so the conditions they are growing in has some sort of issues.

Peas are one of the crops that require so many plants (and take up so much room in the garden) to produce a sufficient harvest that many gardeners pass on growing them.

Once we start having days above 80 degrees- and especially having our Santa Ana winds, my peas start turning yellow from the bottom first. The "younger" your pea plants are, the more this warm dry air will affect them. (Older plants can take a little heat.) Two years ago, my fall peas were so good that I decided to plant a "spring" crop in February. But they struggled, turned yellow, then brown - I got some flowers but never any peas. I had to pull them up in April. (They don't last from year to year.) So this year, I just planted twice as many in October. If you are looking for some greenery on your patio, how about a tomato plant or some rosemary. They are both hardy. And if your balcony is protected, the rosemary is perennial. (Sometimes we can even get a tomato to last the winter to here!) hope this helps.

I start mine in paper pots, too. I fill an under-the-bed plastic container with the pots, sow it, put the lid on and set it outside about the middle of February. The seeds germinate quickly, usually about 2 weeks, and I transplant them to the garden as soon as the ground is dry enough to work in. I transplant paper pots and all, just tearing off the top part of the pot so nothing shows above ground. This has worked really well for me. Back when I direct-sowed them, the crows pulled the seeds out of the ground as soon as they germinated. Wintersowing has fixed that problem since they don't seem to be interested in growing plants, just those appetizing seeds!

I just pulled my snap peas today, and my zone's cooler than yours. I wish I had read Alberta's post before I did. Did you get much of a crop out of yours? The snap peas were delicious, but I ended up with a rather small yield. It seems like I sowed snap peas last fall, but I think I calculated incorrectly and they were killed by a freeze. My spinach and cilantro is bolting, so I figure I should eat up the remaining lettuce this week/weekend. My kohlrabi is not quite ready yet, but some is close. I don't think the kohlrabi will go to seed because it's a biennial, but I wonder if the taste will decline if I wait much longer.

I got them transplanted today - not all of them, I ran out of room, but 66. The germination rate, if no more actually come up, was 65 percent. The plants were somewhat root bound, but not completely. I need to pick up some more seeds and try the 128-cell tray. Transplanting was not difficult, even though I did not have a hoe handy to make a furrow. I would have to keep moving but if I get the moisture content of the potting mix right and the roots are larger, I think I could plant 200-300 per hour. It would still be a 2-6 hour day, depending on how close and quickly I plant them. These had to be about 4" as the space was only about 10 feet. Now the challenge is going to be keeping the temps down, at least during the afternoon. It's 48 outside and the sun is low on the horizon, but it is 87 inside. But, it was over 100 before I got the blanket off so maybe the temps would not be that high. Plus, I have a fan I can use to move air. Mike

5 vines isn't going to give you a large harvest. Snap peas usually produce over a couple of weeks at the longest, then shut down in hot weather. You'll probably have to save up a couple days picking to get a family meal's worth.
