Yep, I am in the Hobby Area. I felt fairly lucky since my neighbor lost a tree that nearly took out her car! I bought these at Froberg Farm in Alvin, the variety is labeled Rosenbaugh. The raspberry incidentally, is a Dorman. I am pretty sure this was a primocane because it was the only one to look like it does, very fresh and green, but without any branches. The rest of the plant has woody stems with flowers. I think I am going to put a narrow strip of plastic lattice I have leftover from other projects into the pot as a quick stake until I decide where I want to put this. Prime Jim and Prime Jan will both be hardy in your area (the crowns, not necessairly the cane) and they do fruit on primocanes, the first year canes. However, the yields on these are fairly low, without tipping treatments. Oregon State University has been doing a lot of research lately on tipping treatments for these two varietes, and found that tipping (removing the top 0.5" or so of the cane) the primocanes when they reach 1m, then tipping the laterals when they reach 1m resulted in quite good (18,000 lbs/acre) yield. However, I don't think your growing season is long enough to do this, as they didn't start ripening until late September/early October. I don't think it would hurt to get a few plants (Prime Jan is a bit better) and see how they do for you. Their flavor isn't quite as good as other blackberry cultivars from the UA program, but it's not as bad as Chester, IMO.

Crown blackberries should be big at planting time just after fruits get into green stage new canes should a pier then again after fruiting ends. Zone 5 pushing limit of time for blackberry plant do its thing I hope you have all sun you funnel in to plants reflective heat would help as in warm place by tin wall on North side plants. If canes flowering now 13 June after 3 to 4 weeks from now July 14th there be change first year all ways slower.

Hi Paul, "It will make new growth off the laterals that will fruit." trim laterals that have already fruited and they will produce? That goes against the requirement of removing laterals once they have fruited... I thought the primocane (first year cane) fruited in the fall and was trimmed, then overwintered it became the florocane (2nd year cane) which fruited off the laterals grown after last fall harvest... After the laterals harvest in spring, the entire plant is removed and thats where these primocane came from this year.. I removed all florocane after the spring harvest this year. A decent one! Problem is, these current primocane have produced laterals that have set fruit. Maybe these primocane laterals are just branches?? and after this harvest they are removed, and a new group of laterals will grow for next spring? I sure miss knowing where a rogue blackberry patch was. A true delight.
