I was quoting from a nursery site. However, this plant seems to be introduced by Garden Debut. Link below. There's not really much information on there. I do not know where to look up plant patent information. Usually though if a plant is bred specifically for hardiness, I would expect some information about that. Indian Hawthorns are not reliably hardy in zone 7A, and to see one listed as zone 6 is amazing. SO.....I would rather hear from someone who has actually grown the plant in their zone 7 garden (especially after THIS winter!) than trust a grower or plant introducer who may have been rushed in getting the plant to market before rigorously trialing it. For example, look at the many gardenias hitting the market that are listed as zone 6. I don't know of ANY gardenias that will not be damaged in zone 6 without major protection. I live reasonably close to the lake North suburb of Chicago, zone 5 / last frost date is May 15/ and have shady garden, most people usually start planting out their begonia, coleus and impatiens on Memorial Day weekend or possibly a week or two earlier if the spring is fine, which is not often. Yes, I can WS many annuals including impatiens but they would not start blooming at least until mid July and even then it takes them a while to look gorgeous and bushy. So I would get gorgeous plants by end of August- Sept and then first Oct frost will do them in. Kind of not worth it doing for me. So I start my annuals indoor, coleus and begonias are started already, tuberous begonias I start in Dec- Jan. I started pansy/ viola in Dec and they are pretty much getting ready to bloom. They are outside in enclosed Florida porch under plastic wrap, getting their share of our chilly weather. I will set them out in couple of weeks into protected spot and will plant out containers in early April. Pansy can take a light frost and I could always bring in few containers when the weather turns real nasty. I will start impatiens shortly, mid March or so.This year my snowdrops opened as usual on Feb 20 so spring is not going to be early in my neck of woods.

I've never heard of the cultivar 'Matico' but I recently planted the regular B. globosa up by the main road where it gets all day sun. It's only about 2' tall now, and it's never bloomed. Two nurseries - Goodwin Creek and Forest Farm - say it's hardy in Zones 7-9. I'm looking forward to mine blooming - it's supposed to make a small tree. I've got yellow lantana growing under it, so, unless it REALLY thrives and shades out the lantana, it could be pretty. Sherry

I'm pretty much borderline between zones 5-6. I have SPINY SEA URCHIN in the garden, and it has overwintered here just fine. I do mulch with about 4- 5 inches of shredded bark after the temps really plunge for more than a few days. I added CAROL TODD this year, so I can't comment on its hardiness, but maybe someone else can. Linda
