I read alot of posts and I see "my Dh bought this for me" etc, what is DH??

Greetings, Neighbor. Sorry to be so late to the party ... I just saw this. Your order now stands at 2 Reve d'Or 2 Cl. Eden 1 Cl. Pinkie Abraham Darby Carefree Beauty Double Delight am I right? I grow all of these except Cl. Eden. Reve d'Or is a baby now, and is going to be planted on the south wall of my house where it can get some heat. My friend in Lake of the Woods grows Reve d'Or brilliantly. (that's one plant) I am trying to contain Cl. Pinkie on an 8' arch. I think it would be happier, and show better, if planted on a fence where it could sprawl a bit. I love the foliage, and the thornless nature, and the flowers make me smile. Abraham Darby wants to get tall and it's self supporting. The one Olga grows in her yard is the best I've ever seen. I thought I had a photo of it, but I don't. Carefree Beauty is a large, lax, self supporting shrub. Double Delight grows like a typical modern hybrid tea, thick canes, straight up. I grow 800 roses, and I spray fungicide every two weeks. Bayer Advanced Disease Control (available at Lowes or specialty garden centers) is my choice. I do not spray insecticide in the garden! I let the birds and the good bugs strike a balance with the bad bugs, and it works for me. Make plans to come visit. I'm planning an Open House, and all GW friends are always welcome. Connie

laceyvail - 'He knew I had just cleared a place for them, but he was trimming a part of the garden that is being re-landscaped as I find the time' As I mentioned they were planted in the garden bed 20'w x 30'l , not in the middle of the lawn. Until I get to it, the area I am replanting gets weeds which neither of us like so he keeps it very short. We were going to cultivate it, but they were calling for rain, which we are really getting over the last few days, and it would have made a muddy mess for the dog to run through. The butterfly bushes are going to be treated as a group planting in an open area. They will be that area's focal point hopefully. My butterfly bushes never reach more than 8', if that. I keep them trimmed to allow for more blooms (on side shoots). Has anyone else ever kept them trimmed to allow for side shoots? Thank you. Jane

Hi Jenny, welcome to the forum! 1. Almost all commercial 'cactus &succulent' soil contains large amounts of peat. It is far too water retentive for most succulents. Use about 75% inorganic materials with particle sizes from 1/8 to 3/8 inch like perlite, pumice, gravel, etc. Use 25% or less of the store cactus and succulent mix as you organic component. This will allow for proper water drainage. Don't use sand, it compacts and blocks drainage. Succulents will not tolerate more than a couple of days with wet feet. Allow the mix to become completely dry before watering. 2. Only you can determine how often to water. It depends on too many local variables (heat, humidity, soil mix, your plants, when it last rained, etc.) for anyone to recommend any particular schedule for watering. Don't let any succulent sit with wet roots for more than 2-3 days. 3. Your cereal bowls with a hole drilled would be fine containers, but may be too large for small plants. Co-planting may be helpful, but make sure the plants have similar cultural requirements. 4. The prime directive for succulent growing is: If in doubt, Don't! This applies to everything. Don't water unless you are sure the pot is dry top to bottom. Don't trim unless you are sure the plants needs it. Don't repot unless it is necessary, etc. 5. The directive above derives from the ideal cultural practice called Benign Neglect. Don't take any action unless you are certain it is necessary. Succulents want to be left alone. Fussing over them is a sure way to kill them. 6. Every plant has it's own cultural requirements. It is important to know what you have so that you can give them proper care. So, the next step is to post some photos of your new plants so that we can identify them, and give you proper care advise. Succulents are much easier to care for than geraniums. Slow, I have no idea where I will start. I feel like I will need to get some more tiles, glass, found objects, yada yada yada, before I can even start. Not to mention some thinset. I just see LOTS of COLOR right now. We will have to be sure where we want to put the tub and get it there before I start. Probably will be a few weeks before I get to anything. They need a good pressure washing and a little rustoleum on one small part in the front of the tub. DH will be using some wood pieces to give it sides and a back too. I have a couple of things I want to finish first, and get an idea of a design. Kinda excited about all of this. It is a major undertaking and I want to find out if I can handle it! BTW-went to Harbor Freight today. My first time. Bought a tumbler and an exacto knife kit. Always have problems with the GEII between the tiles. Anyway, found lots of stuff to add to my Christmas list. What a great day!!

Wow, I can't believe I googled "What does DH mean?" and actually got the answer!! I have been reading on the Garden Web for awhile and DH kept coming up. Of course all I could think of was Dumb Husband, ha. Surely, not all women think that way. :) Glad to know that the D means Dear, although some days I do think the other. :) Thanks for the answer.

Hi ronalawn82,I don't know of a good rebuttal,because the DH varies over the course of a day.If you could start the trend to stop the flip flop,maybe others would catch on lol!!!!!

It can also mean "darn husband". Context varies as needed based on behavior of the DH and also based on the whim of the DH's wife.

ronalawn or any other men, feel free to use DW to refer to your wife anytime - it works the same way. There's also DD and DS (darling - or whatever - daughter and son, respectively).

Now DC - would that always be d*mn computer?! ;)

I use it to mean De Facto Husband because I've been with my partner for 10 years, although we're not legally married. It sounds nicer than my domestic partner (which sounds clinical), or my boyfriend (which makes me feel like we're teenagers), or worse still, my mother calls him my "mate" like we're sailors or animals. Ick!

Wow, who knew there were so many variations! Love the imaginations! KaKe you must have to explain your meaning....DeFacto Husband. I agree with you......I just call my guy My Sweetie. SO which is Significant Other sounds awful, as does Boyfriend. I've seen Main Man used, not sure he would like that one either.

You know, I've been wondering what "DH" meant, but I never thought to ask! I've just assumed that it was actually somebody's initials or something. Though I really like "Damn Hillbilly"!

For the record, there is another common abbreviation here on Gardenweb, and I had wondered what it meant until somebody actually posted the question "What is a noid?" Turns out that it's short for "no identification" (as in "unidentified"), and is often spelled "NoID."

I, too, googled "What is a DH?", feeling very silly and sure I'd never find an answer... I have to add, however, that the title of the thread ("Not a plant question") has gained additional irony in the time elapsed since it was originally written - just the other day, one of my kids used the expression, "Are you a PLANT!?!" to indicate that someone was utterly clueless. Ah, the evolution of linguistics!

When I googled "DH" the first thing that popped up was Di** Head. The site that I was looking at before I googled it was a chat about what to do for fireants in the garden. The consensus was human urine works the best. But everyone was joking about not squatting over the ant hill, just having their DH do it. Made sense...

Glad I got the DH question answered too. I only use the plant and pet forums and gradually guessed that DH referred to the husband, most likely "dear husband." Glad to see it confirmed without having to ask, & love the variations!
