Not much help from me, sorry, I don't have these roses.

I have an arch and a pergola, and I used same rose on each side of the arbor whereas I used three different roses on the pergola and left one corner empty. So, you might want to pick a pair for arbor first: you would want it to cover the arbor but it should be the one with least amount of thorns. After that you can play with the rest.

Hate to be a pessimist, but what part of VA are you in?
I am close to MD/NVA border and Rev d'Or in not hardy here in my experience. Hopefully you are further South.
One thing you need to consider is that climbers are hard to spray. Wherever in VA you are Cl Iceberg and Secret Garden Musk will need regular spray program to keep leaves. Eden is better in this respect but also is going to be half naked w/o spray.

I have trouble with Reve d'Or here in Roanoke. I lose about half of it every winter. I hope you have lots of room--you have some pretty big roses. New Dawn is not a people friendly rose. Left on its own, it will become and 12x12 mass of thorns.

It would help if we knew where you were.

Okay, I am near Leesburg.. so your saying.. most of the plants are not going to work in this area for climbers.. what then should I purchase for climbing up the arbors and pergolas???

It is not so easy to find no spray repeat blooming climers for our area.
Actually I think New Dawn will work. It will require some prunning every year to keep it in boundaries, but otherwise it is good choice in my opinion. My ND gete some bS, but still it looks respectable most of the time.
If you are not against red Quadra is a healthy beautiful red climber. No desease.
One white climber with decent resistance here is White Cap. Again it will get some BS, but still will look decent most of the time. Ghislaine de Féligonde falls into the same category, will BS but look decent.
There are many choices among onceblooming climbers/ramblers, again some BS, but not too much Constance Spry, Cl American Beauty, Veilchenblau, Alberic Barbier(probably too big), Paul Transon, Baltimore Belle and many others.
I am not against spraying, but to spray huge climbers is really painful. Why put yourself in this position.

New Dawn would work for a pergola but not an arbor/arch. I know too many people who have tried it and regret it. It just gets too big too fast and is too thorny to allow people to brush by. Also, it is not a great rebloomer. Zepherina could work and you might look at the hybrid musks, most of whom should do okay for you.

I agrre it is probably going to be too big. I think when people say ND does not repeat well, they have clone reverted to Dr Van Fleet. My ND has excellent repeat, as well as many other NDs around here that I have a chance to observe (my sisters, my friends, etc). It actually repeats better then majority of Austin roses.

Compassion has stiff canes (at least mine does) so you should either try training it very early on or train it on a tripod. Here this rose is bs free, gorgeous and has very fragrant blooms.

Olga, where were you before virginiamomma ordered her roses? We were looking for you as someone who is the authority in the area about climbers and you didn't answer, didn't show up. I advised her against getting climbers that need spraying but certain climbers that do not need spraying here are not necessary bs free in northern Virginia or not hardy there. That's why we were looking for you. I am surprised that RU didn't give her better advise.

I am particularly worried about her getting Secret Garden Musk. I killed it pretty soon and I have some experience with roses. As far as I know that rose needs some special instructions about planting that I didn't follow or should be grown a bit longer in bigger pots before planting. In any case I think someone should help her with this rose and I am not the one who can do that.

Sorry, I couldn't be around much, recently. Too many things going for me. I feel awfully overworked :(., no energy left for fun. I am leaving when it is dark and coming back when it is dark.
Now it is spring, so hopefuully there will be light hours to play in the garden and energy to post.

Virginiamomma, if you are in Leesburg, you are probably less then an hour drive from my place. I am in Rockville area of MD, NW of DC. So you climate should be similar to my.
Crepusculle will not work in my opinion. At least I lost my one winter when we had more temp fluctuations then usual. It was already almost 4 year old, quite big and beautiful.
Colette gets cercospora badly (another spot disease) and some Black Spot here.

I already gave my recommendations few posts above, I don't think I can add much right now.
There are few roses that can be grown no spray here, bushes or climbers. On your list only New Dawn qualifies for no spray, but as people mentioned above will probably going to be too big for your project. I grow my ND on the fence and it is working well.
If you are interested I can try to put together more comprehensive list of roses that can work for you (bushes and climbers).

Olga... your correct about 20 minutes from Leesburg.. Okay, will go back and reread your words again. Will call Roses unlimited today and speak to someone and see if I cant change my order. Virginiamomma ask if Papi Delbard is available at RU. As far as I know it worked out for MichaleG in Asheville. It's not going to be big enough for the pergola but its will work for one side of the arbor-arch. I am afraid to recommend anything any more that is no spray for me here though I live in a blackspot inferno but it seems that its is still different from Olga's bs infestations.

I think you should be able to change your RU order if you tell them that forum members told you that those roses are not hardy in your area or very blackspot prone and you do not want to spray climbers. Furthermore you are a novice gardener and want to start with disease resistant climbers and roses in general. A good vendor does not want to lose potential future customers. Talk to the owner, Pat Henry.

Cercospora mostly in the fall, but Colette gets sugnificant BS too. It is one of these roses, like Baby Love, etc, wich stay mostly clean for 2-3 years and then get horrible BS, and from that point it gets it badly every year. Like some resistance fence got broken and there is no way back.
I don't have experience with Papi Delbard. Hopefully it will work.

Congrats on your new garden and hopefully you get things figured out.

I called and spoke with them, and they seemed to think that each one and location and even where its planted in the yard makes all the difference. I did though change a few things.. I now have coming, 2 new dawn.. and the real New Dawn double checked on that,
2 REv d Ore.. they say they grow beautifully there and do quite well here. I dunno .. but trial and error I will learn right all?, 2 Climbing Edens now, and 1 Pinkie, Carefree Beauty, Abraham Darby, and Double Delight
So took out the secret garden musk, the white climber and sharif asma.. and well.. Guess I will surely find out. Shoot trying to figure out.. which goes where.. LOL.. Thinking of actually mixing the roses on the pergola.. as wll as the arbor.. so if some take off and some dont, some bloom better then others some dont maybe it will work out!!

They can say that to someone who already planted 200+ roses, not to someone who is a total novice. I am sorry that you decided to bring your business to them. They should have offered you hardier and easier roses to begin with.

And maybe you should have talked to Connie who is closer to you in Virginia and knows better what is hardy there and what should be sprayed or not. Maybe you want to contact her anyway and see her garden and nursery(Hartwood roses) somewhere around Friedericksburg, VA.

As to where the rose is planted etc. If the pergola is close to the house and in the backyard that may give you a couple of degree extra protection. Maybe, but not surely. (I just lost a tender tea rose that I had for many, many years. It came through much colder winters without protection, was planted closest to the house in the back but it seems that it did not survive this not so extreme but very long and steady winter.)

Too bad that you did not have the patience to wait for Olga's list. She graciously offered to make a list for you. I am sure her list would have been bullet proof. For example, Lady Hillingdon, as far as I remember, is doing very well in her garden. But if Olga gives you any advice, save it. She is one of the most experienced rosarians in your area and her roses are out of the world.

And in the future buy from Pickering and forget RU if they treated you, a novice so inconsiderately.

I am trying to contain Cl. Pinkie on an 8' arch. I think it would be happier, and show better, if planted on a fence where it could sprawl a bit. I love the foliage, and the thornless nature, and the flowers make me smile.

Abraham Darby wants to get tall and it's self supporting. The one Olga grows in her yard is the best I've ever seen. I thought I had a photo of it, but I don't.

Carefree Beauty is a large, lax, self supporting shrub.

Double Delight grows like a typical modern hybrid tea, thick canes, straight up.

I grow 800 roses, and I spray fungicide every two weeks. Bayer Advanced Disease Control (available at Lowes or specialty garden centers) is my choice. I do not spray insecticide in the garden! I let the birds and the good bugs strike a balance with the bad bugs, and it works for me.
