The big ball that did, after all, (so far).

This plan is a bit risky, but I'm going to try my best to make it work.

I'm hanging the ball on a steel rod (not the one in the picture, heavier)

by a point (top of the rod) and an inverted galvanized fence cap

that's embedded in concrete and mesh inside the ball, opposite the hole.

There should be almost zero friction and the ball should spin at a light touch.

Almost all the weight is below the point of suspension, keeping sideways wobble

to a minimum.

Right now I'm trying to put wings on it.

Like I said, I'm not sure it's going to work, but I AM having fun!

My dog, however, is bored stiff.

I've never paid much attention to classic (or new) HTs at the box stores, of which they carried quite a few, but our local HD carried several OGRs when I still lived in the US. In my first rose growing year in the US, not knowing any better, I purchased one Reine des Violettes, two Rose de Rescht, two Comte de Chambord, one Sombreuil and one modern, Altissimo from them. All true to type except for Sombreuil which turned out to be Cl. Iceberg, certainly an intentional mislabeling. Only one, Altissimo, was clearly virused, as it turned out in its second year. While it performed very well, it couldn't hold a candle to the, I'm quite sure, non-virused Altissimo I bought the next year from DA and planted right next to it. In later years, I had the impression that Reine des Violettes might have been virused too, since some leaves on one, only one, of its lowest branches showed a pattern that could have been RMV, but it wasn't an entirely clear positive. I am not sure about the claim that an RMV infection may not even show at all, not even faintliest. To me such claims sound like "guilty by default (or association) without proof", and as a historian, I have problems with this kind of approach. However, I know that biology (which I've also studied way back then) is not politics or history, and I'd like to see some scientific literature on this. Jeri, do tou have anything at hand? Thanks everyone for your continued encouragement! When I see the range of plants that you have all grown and look at mine I admit I tend to get a bit jealous of the good results you get. I forget that growing such plants here in the less than favourable UK is a challenge, so to have 21 from seed and still alive is not too bad at all then? I am pleased with my 3 big ones even though flowers elude me at present. If I can sort out the one with crispy tips, then all the better. Rick, hi there, I imagined those that you sowed would be outgrowing mine in leaps and bounds! I have pinched the 3 big ones once as I don't particularly like the long tall look that obesums can show especially when grown in lower light conditions. For some reason I have got a mass of branches...the right hand one is especially branchy. In fact there are so many I can't count them! Hello Heather, glad you like them. 'Size envy', ha-ha, yes I've definitely got that, lol! I find them so easy to germinate and get going...it's the after care that can be problematic, that said, I don't lose many to rot once past the small seedling stage. ...and now Pagan, hi to you too! Thanks for your kind words. Nope, no repeated pinching at all just the initial nipping out of the leader on the 3 big guys, the others haven't been pinched yet as they are not that big really. Only the first 3 are Arabicums by the way. The only survivors are the 3 big guys plus the 2 largest NOID obesums in pic 4, the ones in the terracotta pots. I guess I lost 18 or so. So far our trees don't look that bad. They just look pretty. It's a layer of ice and then a whole bunch of sleet. I think we have about an inch total. I talked to my family in Arkansas a little while ago. My brother's house doesn't have power, but my dads still does. They are expecting the bad stuff to come in tonight. They have a fireplace and a generator so they'll be ok.

momo3... thanks for checking in! just so happens that lots has been going on in the last two weeks, but it's still very incomplete. For starters, we had lots more digging while the pb's landscaping crew came in and buried some downspouts and dug out the patio and planting boxes, etc....but still no sign of the actual pavers that will make up both patio and pool deck....so PB does a total 180, sends the plaster crew out and lo and behold we were pebbleteched on Thursday and water was added Friday. PB will complete the patio and decks within the next 10 days...NOW HERE'S THE KICKER...the whole family left town for 10 days at the Jersey shore on Thursday, and we won't see the pool until the 6th! It's sitting in the backyard all ready for us and we're not there!!! PB is minding the pool while we're away, brushing and balancing, etc...esp. since he's building the patio all week anyway. Murphy's Law or what? I'll post pics next week when I return....have to check the log to see if you've updated your pics too...hope you're all swimming now!

Thanx Rick and Dellare, it's the one that flopped, 32" or so, vinyl patching cement
over chicken wire for "scratch coat", then more of the same over strategically
placed wire lath.

I seriously considered y'all's intriguing recipes, but felt better using a familiar
product for now, being short of time for material hunting/experiments.

My dog pukes in a car, he'd be very uncomfortable suspended in a wind-spinner,
if that's what it turns out to be, 5' above ground.
He's a bit of an Eyore with 3" legs.
Something else, now that you mention it, may decide to move in.

I'll keep you posted, though it may take a while, my company is going into its season.

Forget your real work! We want to see the winged ball spin! This is such a great idea. I wonder if water routed up the pole so it would cascade over the ball would make a neat moving fountain......

You know one thing I love about this forum?
It never occurs to anyone to ask: "WHY"! Why would anyone want to put a
concrete ball on an iron pipe? Everybody knows what that BECAUSE is.

Laura, I feel more and more the same way, but I shouldn't really complain;
-this IS 80% of our annual gross, right now. It's the Bacon
(and the concrete, and the time) and, my life didn't just get washed away
by a hurricane. I still complain :o)

I do have an idle well...know what you mean, it's been stewing, over a year..
Like I just mentioned to Carol in another thread, the CONTEXT is a lovely subject!

You can use tulle stretched and glued on a light weight metal frame to make wings. I took a class a few years ago on making slab rocks and that's what we used. Billie

That is one of the funkiest things I have seen yet! Been studying your stand....is it one of those clothes stands? I may have one of those kicking around, I believe...I just love your project, and it is inspiring me, which is such a dangerous thing!

Like the others who have posted, I think your project is intriguing and inspiring. Maybe if you mounted it on a fire hydrant, your dog would show more interest.
