Why do all my plants die?

Hi,

I moved to France last year, and since then I'm having really bad luck with houseplants. They're all dying on me! Plants that we had brought with us when moving have died and now I bought a Limonella plant which just appears to be drying up no matter how much I water it.

Is there any possible explanation based on the change of address? There is slightly less natural light here, but I can't believe it's enough to produce such a drastic reation. The only other thing I can think of is that the neighbour has a cat which wanders in and out of our appartment... Could he have done something?

Any rescue tips for the Limonella would also be greatly appreciated.

The most common reasons for consistent lack of success with indoor plants include: too frequent watering, improper watering (different from too frequent), poor quality potting mix, wrong plant for the site.

The only thing I can think of that would be related to a change in address would be if your old house was reasonably humid and your new one is not.

I grow Jalapeno, Chile Grande, Cubanelle, Hungarian Yellow Wax, New Mex Sunrise, Colossal, California Wonder, Diamond, Golden California Wonder, Orange Sun, and Purple Beauty. In separate containers on a Deck. When my peppers start looking like the ones in the above photos it's because I haven't watered them enough. They all seem to require more water during periods of long, hot, days Regardless of variety. When watered and moved into the shade for a day they come right back. I'm not saying they can't show similar symptoms due to over watering, It's just that mine always wilt pretty much in unison With all varieties showing similar symptoms within hours of each other. ~Ken~

Paul3: Yes, consistently (little variation) dark (not really extremely dark), cool, dry are very important for dormancy storage of bananas. The interactions of light with non-freezing but low temperature causes chilling injury in most tropical plants which can progress to cell tissue death and subsequent attack by molds and fungi. What happens in this case is that when light strikes the leaves or stems or any photsynthetic tissues, the electrons gets fired up. But the low temperature lowers metabolic activities such that there are no active electron acceptors down the photosynthetic factory. The excited electrons when its energy cannot be diffused would literally damage tissues around it. Damaged tissues are susceptible to attack by fungi or bacteria. Only small wattage light are okay to use, and intermittently only when you need it. The dryness is important to discourage rotting away the corm. The cool is something natural during winter time and induces dormancy of tropical plants as long as it is non-freezing. These three things should be played out in balance. I have kept mine in garage where I have stable temperature that varies only by 10 deg F every day (45 deg F to 55 deg F) during the winter. If your attic temperature varies only by 10 deg F during the entire 24 hours, then that should be okay.

Janice: According to Clemson I was within the planting window but towards the end ( I am in the central area). I planted April 15th (planting for my area is April 5-25). But you do have a good point about planting earlier. I usually like to plant at least some early (in March) under row covers to get earlier fruit. I do know that this year fruiting (and also my leaf yellowing problem that seems somehow linked to fruiting) is at least a few weeks later than normal. But I chalked that up to the high-nitrogen chicken manure which caused a lot of green leafy growth at the expense of fruit. Two years ago I grew peppers with great success, I've tried squash and cucumbers in these beds 2 or 3 years ago which both failed miserably. But I have added a lot of lime and fertilizer since then. My pH in these beds 2 years ago was 4.0 -5.5 so one would not expect squash to do well. Last two or three years these beds have had tomatoes and peppers, because I care the most about tomatoes and wanted to put them where there was the most sun. Thanks so much for your time. I doubt humidity has anything to do with it. Here in southern CA it is normally about 10% humidity...static cling all the time. I wouldn't be able to grow the plants I do if it were true. I do not run a humidifier, nor do I mist or provide pebble trays.
Your Limonella is probably not absorbing much. It maybe be planted in peat which can get rock hard and not absorb.

Shut the door and windows and keep the cat out.

90% of houseplants are killed by overwatering.

What is the water like that you are using now? Could that be the problem?
Asking because I have large amounts of iron in my water. None of the plants mind and grow well here as long as I repot often and use a light mix for everything because the soil seems to compact much faster and gets rather funky after a length of time. Before I did this nothing lived all that long...Years ago too much lime was an issue where I grew up, pots were always heavily crusted with white...

How long on average does it take before you loose your plants to the grim reaper?

The answer could well lie in this..:-)

Maybe by the time you come back and get the help you need to rescue, you might loose another..;-(
