Lessons learned - 1st half of the season.

After 6 years of gardening, one would think that I might learn from my frequent mistakes. That does not seem to be the case. I am hoping by committing these lessons to print, I might really take them to heart for next year. Please feel free to list your lessons as well.

1) Space everything farther apart. I really could grow beans that don't jump cross over to the next varieties bean tower. My tomatoes could be more than 2 feet apart. I suspect less would actually be more and I would have healthier plants and higher yields.

2) I need an irrigation system. I'm too lazy to remember to water often enough.

3) Plant peas earlier - the heat here kills them.

4) Plant less - The kids don't want 35 cauliflowers over 2 weeks. My neighbors are starting to make believe that they aren't home.

5) Kill the cucumber beetles easy to avoid cucumber wilt.

6) Cover the eggplant - bugs love them.

7) Corn grown with 1 foot spacing in all directions produces small ears despite what the square foot proponents insist.

8)Stake the peppers early before they fall over.

9) Order less new seeds in the winter. I really don't need a pound of Lima bean seeds.

  1. Patience starting the tomatoes from seed. Smaller plants are better than root bound big ones.
