The meal I have been dreaming of...

Tonight we are finally able to have a dinner I have dreaming about all winter.

On the menu:

-venison steak (hunted from land around hubby's family cabin)

-kohlrabi done slaw style

-steamed green beans and broccoli from my garden

-an assortment of herbs from my herb garden to flavor above mentioned food.

The only thing not local or from garden is the rice, olive oil, vinegar and salt and pepper. These things just aren't grown/made in WI.

Isn't it fun telling people "I had dinner from the garden last night" They look at you like your head is screwed on crooked!
My most recent one was a vege quiche (I have chickens) with a big salad.
I'm hoping to add bread making (found a bread maker for &1, just have to learn how to use it!)and pasta making this summer.
Love it when I go to the doc and she asks about my diet. "well, my snack today was a handful of fresh greenbeans and a handful of cherry tomatoes while I was out in the garden! LOL

Wow! That's beautiful, Squirrlley! Love the colors...and the pattern! I've been collecting mosaic table top pictures, too. Hope to get to making a small table soon. Kelly: Those 27 years will FLY by!!! Especially during the summers! :) I retired after 23 years teaching... but decided to go back. Am working on a 2nd retirement. Hmmmm... but now that I'm REALLY having fun with the mosaics.. might want to stop earlier. OH... forgot about the $$$ involved. Oh well!!! :) Meanwhile... went to my favorite little TS yesterday... bought a couple of plates to crack... but on the way out saw an OLD skateboard. It was a $1.00. So... I grabbed it up, paid, and put it with the TBM stuff. My daughter's almost step-son is an avid skate boarder so I'm planning to mosaic it for him for Christmas. More added to the list! Katie

This wasn't exactly random but a few months ago I witnessed a car hit a brand new car in the parking lot outside my work, and the guys just parked and walked away. He hit it really hard so he obviously knew he had done it. I walked up to the new car and it had huge scratches on it. So I left a note for the owner with my info saying I had witnessed it, and I took a bunch of pics of her car (and his car) on my cell phone. The woman called me when she got back to her car and I got her email and forwarded her all the pictures and a statement of what I witnessed. Her insurance company called me the next day and I forwarded it all to them also. Anyway, I forgot all about it and a few weeks later the lady showed up at my work with a card and a box of fancy chocolates for me! She had gone into the few businesses around our block to figure out where I worked. She asked all about my work (a non-profit that houses homeless people) and she took my card and said she would also make a donation! She was so sweet and appreciate about the small kindness I had done her! It comes back to you exponentially!

i was saying "crazy inventor" because i was playing with the thought of powering a heat pump with a windmill etc.... you could probably get it to work, if you invested enough time and money (every husband's (not) dream - unless you lucked out and he is either rich or an inventor who would thrive on the project to create a self contained, cooling environment for your plants).... however, low tech is probably the better way to go. think of ancient roman architecture for example. they used a bunch of tricks to make the mediterranean more livable. one that comes to mind is a water feature underneath the window that supplies a rooms air. this freshened up the air and cooled it. (maybe try a fan blowing across a bucket of water to see if it would work.) - a stray thought that goes with this concept was that, in the desert, people hang nets to catch condensation. in reverse, you could use a net of a wicking material and use it to evaporate water.... another (greek?) thing was the use of porous clay pots to hold water - the evaporation kept it cool. - I've been using clay pots for wicking, clogging the bottom holes and putting them in a dish of water. now, if that dish were clay as well, i am thinking that would cool the entire container as well as the plants. i'm sure there is more. but i am drawing a blank and should be getting back to work. when googling "cooling a house naturally" the suggestions were airflow (especially removing hot air and replacing it with cool air at night), painting the roof white, using awnings and shutters, planting trees etc. common denominator being to reduce the impact of the sun.

Sleevendog, the wonderful thing about belated Birthday well-wishes is that they extend the happiness : ) And thank you both (Islay, too) for the Charcuterie Definition. I didn’t know the French pronunciation, but doubt I’ll use it here, or even the word charcuterie. Most here would think me pretentious, which is silly as I like to use words correctly. So, does this mean if I make canadian bacon or pastrami (from pork), I can (temporarily) call myself a Charcutier? LOL! Well, I just might anyway! Sleevendog, thank you also for mentioning the free-edge/live-edge board. That was my gift to myself : ) I think it’s so beautiful! I often toss together a board (the bread board above was from an old restaurant, the charcuterie with live edge from Etsy) of cheeses, crackers, meats, apples, grapes… whatever I have on hand, for pre-dinner snacking, or lunch nibbling. I wanted a larger, prettier board than the bread board : ) Funny thing is, when I bought my first furniture, the area in which I lived had tons of furniture with free-edging/live edging (horizontal slice tree trunks, vertical slabs). And they were cheap! And huge! I bought a large one for my coffee table on a major budget. New! After a while, the area was over-saturated with them, and I couldn’t give mine away when upgrading. Truth! So when they first came out, it took me a while to not see them as ‘cheap’ stuff! I have learned a new appreciation… everything old is new again : ) I think it looks both rustic and fine, simultaneously. I am a wood grain lover. And while I have your attention, those flageolet beans? Amazing. We can’t stop eating them on salads. I’m making some with leftover too-salty ribs, shredded, and roasted tomatoes next. Mercurygirl, you sound like me, I’ve moved several plants, including roses. Hard to keep up with where they are until they leaf out or bloom! Naturegirl, you are most welcome! Edie, I have one of those rolling pins! So heavy! I am sure you can roll it out thin enough. I would recommend a few things… if using crackers for cheeses, don’t add cheese to the cracker dough, just make them as is, and perhaps toss in some dried herbs (the flavor of dried herbs does come through) as appropriate. If serving with a soup, or alone, cheese tastes wonderful : ) Annie, don’t do what I did, though, and over prep/cook! I was feeling a bit frazzled by the time the day rolled around! But yes, making lots of nibbles satisfies everyone. And they can be easy ones. BTW, your hummus was wonderful! Thank you! I froze some, and hope that’s ok.

I have a confession: Yesterday I was working out in the garden all day weeding, fixing the fence, etc., surrounded by beds filled with organic vegetables. Around suppertime I dug into the meal I had been craving Â double mushroom pizza delivered from town!

ninjabut: Have you heard of no knead bread? You totally don't even need a bread machine to make aaaaaamazing bread. Seriously, it's some of the best bread I've ever tasted, and all it requires is that you mix it up with a spoon, and leave it alone for 8-18 hours.

The meal was delicious! I am enjoying the small carbon foot print my meal made. I also like knowing I ate a healthier meal than I could buy in the grocery store.

When I was at the grocery store after dinner, my husband and I did a quick walk through produce. Pound of beans 99 cents, pound of broccoli 99 cents. The beans didn't look nearly as good as mine, and the broccoli looked sad. Needless to say, my hubby and I didn't feel compelled to buy anything in produce.

awesome, the other day I had local, friend caught smoked salmon (less then 3 days old), fresh caught bottom fish (hours fresh) my green beans & zucchini. All local, fresh, and not from a store. Felt good!

I thought taking a picture after I had already finished the meal. The meal looked so good that I couldn't stop from diving in, and then once I started eating, I didn't stop until it was finished.

Tonight I am having rabbit picked up from the farmers market, my first squash of the season (honey bear variety), and left over green beans. I'm going to cook my rabbit in a crock pot I found at a thrift store for $7. I've never used a crock pot before so fingers crossed I don't ruin the rabbit. Maybe I'll take a picture of that meal - if I don't eat it up again without thinking.

Rabbit should be great in a crock pot. I've done it many times.
