What plants do you have groups of?

Hi everyone,

Happy new year! I was curious to see what plants you collect. For instance I have more than one of many plants. Two different Dieffenbachias, 3 Dracaenas, 2 Philodendrons, 3 Peperomias, 3 Pothos,3 Aloes, 3 Snake plants, 2 Aglaonemas...and the list goes on. They are different types, I am wanting to start collections of each plant. What do you have more than one of?

Angel, I'm at the stage of my life that I have better things to do than be concerned about my houseplants.
We have discovered travel...just got back from the Dominican Republic....and intend to go again..I hate winter.
Fortunately, this cannot reasonably be called a winter...but the sand on the beach is still beckoning.

I have 6 Christmas Cactus, three phils, a ficus, a paphiopedilum (sp?) and a couple others that right now I cant remember their names....and I am trying to dump them onto my son to take care of.
He's already said he will take my two dogs....but not the plants...he doesn't want the responsibility of killing them.
So I'm searching. Four sisters....but 3 of them are going with me to Punta Cana.

We do treat them like babies don't we....worse than cats that's for sure.

Right now I don't have multiple of any plants. I like variety, and can really only afford one of each type of plant I get. However, some plants are ready to be divided like my bromeliads. So, I'm looking forward to making multiples of different plants next year!!

This nursery is wholesale seller with only a 100$ minimum order, and they sell to anyone. This is an opportunity to get together and buy some desireable plants very cheaply. Plants are sold in groups of 25 and the price per plant ends up being much, much cheaper than your local nursery, even if you can find some of these varieties. I propose that people on this forum who are interested do a group purchase. The plants can be mailed in bulk to my home, and then people can either come here and pick them up, or, if you don't live close by, I can mail them to you. I've given some thought to how this could work and here are the guidelines I have come up with: 1. In the next post, I'll create a list of plants that I know I am interested in, just to get us started. By the plant name, I'll put the price per plant and how many I would like. Note that they are sold in groups of 25 plants. 2. If you see something on the website that I have not listed, but you are interested in, DMAIL me and I will add that item to the list, along with your name and how many you would like. Please don't post to the thread asking me to add the item, because I might miss it. I'd like this thread to not get bogged down with too many posts, because I don't want to make a mistake. (That happened to me on the traveling gnome thread, and I don't want to repeat the experience.) When you dmail me, give me the name of the plant, the price of the plant, and how many you want. This way I can create a folder in my dmail just for this information. 3. If you see something on the posted list you would like to have, DMAIL me that you'd like your name added to that plant, and state how many you want. I will continually edit the list so everyone can see how many of each thing they are committing to and what is still available. When the number of orders reaches 25 for each plant, I will 'close' that plant. Anyone wanting that plant is welcome to add another group of 25 to the list and see if there are enough takers to round it out. There are some plants that are so cheap that you might want to buy an entire group of 25 - great way to get that 'large drift of color or texture' look without paying too much. If so, just dmail me that you want the entire group of 25. I'll still put it on the list so it doesn't get confusing. 4. We should set a time limit for getting the order together - say two weeks from today. Then I will find out how much the postage will be for the order. We'll all have to split the postage evenly unless someone has a better idea. Also, for starters I'm limiting this to the NW forum just to keep it to a mild roar, but if there isn't enough interest to round out orders, we can open it up to other forums. 5. I will need for everyone to pay me for their part before I place the order. I will tally everyone's order and send each person a dmail with the total amount, including postage. If anyone is computer savvy enough to figure out how to do this using a spreadsheet or something, I would welcome the help with it. Numbers are not my strong suit. All the information should be on the list - name, price per plant, how many, and then postage. No sales tax. ! 6. You can send me a check, or you can pay into my paypal account. But if you pay via paypal, I'd appreciate your adding in the fee they charge me everytime someone deposits money into my account. I'll have to check to find out the percentage. 7. When the plants arrive, if you live closeby and want to come help sort and fill orders, that would be great. Otherwise, people can make arrangements for me to either mail them or to come pick them up themselves. You pay for the postage for this mailing either through paypal with the added fee, or by check. I collect tropicals and I like rare plants. I don't really keep track. I will go 3 mos without buying any then splurge a little when I find something 'good' lol. I know what I do and do not have...sometimes finding it is a different story lol. Chickens like to pull tags off of plants and out of the pots, so some of my older stuff like dragonfruits, I don't know which variety is which, but I know I have 8 different ones and I know the names of which varieties I bought haha. I have started using paint pens on all the pots and UV resistant marker and tree tags or metal tags on the taller plants so they can't get removed so easily. I spent way too much on water plants this spring but I hardly bought anything all winter so.... The seedlings that I have kept careful track of (ones I used paint pens on the pots) are my brugmansia seedlings and other hybridizing projects. I also use a spreadsheet so I know who begat whom on those. I usually give myself 3 times to kill something before I give up. If I kill it twice I will wait to buy it again until whatever conditions I couldn't provide the plant are fixed. Of course, if I get it again for free=that philosophy goes out the window. ~SJN

Ann, I suppose you could bury a softer plastic pot. Obviously and clay or ceramic would be a goner! The only other thing I can think of would be some sort of large construction concrete piece, such as a cinder block that has the one large opening. It could be totally buried since only the roots need to be contained, so it wouldn't be an eyesore. That would survive the ground freezing. The only other thing that comes to mind is one of those concrete pipe sections, but they are generally pretty big around, so it sort of negates the "crowding" effect of being rootbound. I enjoy it in the pot though, and it's no problem to take in in winter. I'm hoping that it blooms well this year.

PK, I pulled it up as soon as I saw the first leaves emerge. When I pull up an invasive, I don't merely tug and yank, I get my hand weeder (or shovel) and go down deep to get the roots. Merely pulling the plant up usually leaves too much root behind. Even in places where I could not get rid of every bit of root, I just made sure that I cut off every leaf that sprouted, which insured the death of the plant trying to emerge. Diligently removing emerging foliage on pesky invasives (such as alstromeria) worked well for me because the little brittle roots were impossible to dig up. Molly

I have 2 AV's, seven succulents, five lucky bamboo's, five pothos, three philo's, three scheffs, three dieff's, 3 sans, three palms, three money tree's, 2 begonia's, 4 spider plants - most are different types and sizes. Great thread!!

Fun to see what other folks have, isn't it? I'm a compulsive collector--don't usually have more than one of any variety except when I start cuttings for someone else, but I have a large number of begonias, a fair collection of gesneriads (african violets, chiritas, episcias, various basket types) and a smaller collection of aroids (alocasias mostly in the house, others outdoors) and a smattering of cactus, succulents, other misc. types--probably some things I haven't thought of. Seems like I spend most my time watering, and grooming, and admiring--

oh my lets see I have 3 kinds of deffenbachia, 2 jades, 2 homophilas, 2 amaranthus, 2 rubber plants, 6 philos, 2 varieties of pothos in multiple, 4 AVs, 2 peace lilies, 4 palms, 3 varieties of spider plant in multiple, 3 snake plants, and 6 Bosten ferns. my houseplant count was up to 70 as of today.

I have very few HP's this year compared to previous years. Right now, I have 11 thanksgiving/Christmas cactus, 27 Epiphyllums, 3 lepismiums, 7 Rhipsalis, 7 hoyas, a monstera, a Philodendron, 5 pothos, 2 citrus trees, and some unknown/uncounted houseguests.

I only have aroids & they're grouped by: about 6 Philodendrons, 2 Syngoniums, 1 Peace Lily, 1 Dieffenbachia, & about 6 from the Pothos family.

Hubby has 1 African Violet (purple) that's upstairs with my Pothos' & 1 Coffea on the sink next to the coffee maker. LOL Our son has 1 meat-eater (Starfish Plant) in the same location as the Coffea & 2 Christmas Cacti (yellow & salmon) grouped with my Dieff & Spath.

Tropical hibiscus - about 13 of them. Not really houseplants but they have to live in the house from October through May. Tropical waterlilies - 5 - ditto. Several ficus - benjamina, benjamina variegated, elastica variegated, a tiny leaved variegated bonsai type whose tag I've lost. I don't really like the ficus that much but I love variegation! 2 minicatt orchids. Several paph orchids and bromeliads I just adopted from work where they were going to be trashed. Otherwise I try to stick to just one of each - if I divide, I try to give away because otherwise I'd have no room.

I, too, have several collections within my collection.
Sansevieria, Crassula, Kalanchoe, Senecio, Dischidia, Rhipsalis, Hoya, Ceropegia, Ficus, Begonia, Philodendron, Euphorbia, Epiphyllum, African violet, Homalomena, Dracaena, Hibiscus, Citrus, Aglaonema, Dieffenbachia, Aloe, Sedum, Passiflora, Nematanthus, Polyscias, Spathiphyllum, Schefflera, Cissus, Palms,(various) Syngonium, Aeschynanthus, Orchids, Raphidophora, Epipremnum, Acalypha, Calathea, Croton, Plectranthus, Anthurium, Streptocarpus, Tillandsias and other Bromeliads, Alocasia and Colocasia, Caladium, Peperomia, Aracauria, Ferns, (various) Asparagus, Brugmansias, and various single 'oddball' cacti, succulents, gesneriads and other tropicals.

The diversity in many plant groups is amazing, with different foliage shapes and textures, variegation and or mottling, habit, etc...there's always something new!

Hello,

I have 2 Birds of Paradise (huge, showstoppers!)4 large Peace Lilies, 2 medium Anthuriums and scores of other lil cuttings and smaller plants: Aloes, Gardenias, Lucky Bamboo, all sorts of Cacti, and the kids have plants growing from fruit and vegtable seed they collect.

Greenelbows1, I too am a compulsive collector! I don't really have multiples of any one plant, but I feel like I won't be satisfied until I have one of everything! That'll never happen (or so my fiance hopes, I'm sure), but a fun goal nonetheless :)

This is fun. I have 3 dracaenas, 1 big jade and over 10 little jade plants (from the mother plant), 3 sansevierias, 2 peperomias, 3 spiders, lots of succs....
But my biggest collection which is constantly growing is my Hoya collection - I have 18 hoyas (for now!).

Let's see... I have 4 dracaenas, 2 cordylines,2 aglaonemas, 4 begonias,2 peperomias, 3 sanseverias, 4 kalanchoes, 3 sedums, 2 sempervivums, 5 echeverias, 3 crassulas and 2 aloes. All the plants are different, there is no repetition. Then I have other plants, in a total of about 60.

1.)Philodendron- 19, but still hungry for more.
2.)Sansevieria- Fell in love(:) and lost most of my Hahnii(sensitive to cold!) types this winter(neglect)- Anyway, now it's 15-16.
3.) Tradescantia(including Callisia)- 6
4.) Schlumbergera Truncata- 14-15
5.)Syngonium- Lost some of those too, to the love bug. LOL Now I only have about 6. Boo hoo!
6.) Begonia- about 15
7.)Dieffenbachia- 4 and hungry for a couple more varieties. Don't know the names, though.
8.) Amaryllis- Can't forget about bulbous plants, right? 7 varieties and looking for more.

My collection of Spider plants is growing too. They've been attracting my attention lately. I have only 2 kinds, but am looking for more!

I never thought of calling them a collection ummm wonder if it makes a difference...
sans currently 4 types looking for more
hoya currently 3 types
huernia 4 types
opuntia prickly pear 5 types
agave 2 types
palm 2 types
epips 3 types
orchids 4 types
stapelia 3 types
lots of barrel type cacti
lots of columnar cacti
and lots of others I have a house full of plants and always adding to it
