I think there are a lot of comments here that pertain to garden cultivars and non-native species. Cleome serrulata has no smell, small leaves and can be tricky to establish. This species needs 10-12 weeks of cold stratification. I usually gather wild seed and sow in November so that it gets covered with snow for several months.

I just bought a pot of this at a farmers market in Maryland. Do you know if deer and rabbit browse on it? Btw, I don't smell any bad smells either!

A year later, I just bought some more of these from the same farmers market. The deer, rabbit and groundhog all left these alone last year. Bees and hummingbirds love them. Mine are about 2-3”’ tall and no smell. The farmer said they will not reseed in our area.
