Really old grass clippings

Several years ago we had a lawn service that bagged the grass clippings and left them behind for us to dispose of. Well since our town will not take bagged yard waste the bags have sat in place for about 3 years. They are now totally decomposed and black. I used some in a container for tomatoes...but was not really sure if this was safe. I have lots more. Is it usable as fertilizer in containers? If so how would I do so...can it be used in flower beds

Maybe a stupid question but I gotta ask, novice gardner
