Grass clippings in the beds

My grass is pretty weedy and I'm fortunate that our landlord cuts it. However, when they cut the grass it gets blown into the gardens (they don't face the mower the opposite way so it doesn't blow into the garden). I've heard some people use grass clippings as mulch. I have known other people to place grass clippings on a bare spot on the lawn saying that it will seed and fill in (maybe an old wives tale...don't know). So are these grass clippings going to cause grass to grow in my garden or are they beneficial mulch? I currently have compost for mulch right now and plan to do more wood chip mulching later in the season.
