I works fine, but if your grass has gone to seed, you'll be spreading grass seed in your beds. It works better if you compost it first. Pile the grass clippings with some dry leaves, and a shovelfull of regular garden soil, and a spritz of water from the hose. Then toss them together with your garden fork a couple times. Every few days, toss them again. In about a month or two you should have some nice compost. Spread that on your beds and all your plants will be happy. USe a couple spoonfuls to a gallon of water and let it steep for a day or two, strain out the solids and water your houseplants with it, and they'll be happy too. Cheryl

I have a bed where I grow daffs and tulips in spring and dahlias in summer. As the spring bulb foliage dies back, I mulch with fresh grass clipping (not more than 2 inches at a time). It keeps the weeds down and the dahlias moist longer. As it breaks down, it feeds the bulbs and the tubers.

I mulch my veggie garden with a layer of newspaper and then grass clippings. It works well to keep the weeds down.

grass clippings have worked fine for me for 35 years.

I've used them, and they work great, but they can get hot, so be sure not to overdo (the 2" thick layer Libby talks about is perfect)

I object to the ugly straw-y yellow color they turn after they have been down a few weeks. You are lucky to have pine needles to put over them (I think the pine needles are pretty, but you may have another opinion.)

I used these alot in Louisiana, where I mostly spread them around young and old trees and shrubs to make a circle that suppressed grass and weed growth and served as a mulch and mowing barrier. They worked great. Here in Mississippi, where I was begging for organic material in my new place, I spread some of my neighbor's grass clippings. Maggots grew like crazy in that. I have come to realize that he gets his lawn fertilized and the grass was fairly wet, so it made a slimy mess. It was horrible. At my other house, I did not fertilize or use any chemicals.
So just be careful if the grass is very wet and very "green" (too much nitrogen?).

Due to the Hose bans we have over here in London I use grass mulch both on me veg and me flower beds,To supress weeds I prepare the ground and then cover it with double thickness of black plastic? I then place the grass clipping on the first layer of plastic with a layer of compost on top of the grass. I then cover this with the second layer of plastic and cover the plastic with sand, pebbles or slate or with woodchippings.
When I want to plant I make a simple hole with a knife through the plastic dig the hole, I plant the plant replace the woodchippings.
I have No weeds plenty of water held in the ground and when the sun shines heat on the plastic makes more water. 3 parts of my garden are watered in this fashion. One thing you can not do is put earth back on top of the plastic because it will attract shallow rooted weeds to grow. My lupins and laverders thrive AND SLUGS AND SNAILS HATE IT.
