self-watering containers

I have just started planting my first garden, and I have been using many self-watering containers to cut down on watering on my full-sun, southern facing deck with no water tap:)

So far so good, but we're 2 weeks into the process at most.

The threads about soil have me wondering about the oxygen. Are my plants going to get enough in the self-watering containers? They are getting watered from the bottom, basically. Are they going to be able to pull in the gases they need?

What are the negatives to self-watering? It seems like people don't like them much, or am I wrong?
