Window Box - Sun or Shade

I am planning my garden and started thinking about how poorly my window boxes did last year. I want to do something different and hope you might have some ideas.

Here is my dilemna.

I purchased two nice cedar window boxes for my front porch. They fit my windows perfectly, unlike the cheap plastic ones I have always used. The front porch is a very deep porch so the window boxes get plenty of light, but very little direct sunlight. I have tried annual shade plants, which seem to get too much light and shrivel up and die, and I have tried annual plants for sun, but they do not get enough sun to grow or bloom well. I have tried Alyssum, Impatiens, Coleus(which did reasonably well), and Nicotiana. I was not pleased with the results.

Can anyone suggest some other annuals that might do well in this type of environment.

Thanks so much!!
