Container Gardening

window box all shade 2 hours pm sun

I have a window box on a balcony surrounded by lattice. N.W. exposure so it is shade all day then appx 2hrs strong late afternoon sun. I have had various ivy in there and that has bee great but all of a sudden it's almost dead. I am going to plant something else. Suggestions?

That's a very difficult site. Naturally, we all want to know if you have any idea as to why your ivy died. Is the potting medium a good one and does it drain well? Are you able to water properly? Did you examine the ivy for spider mites, one of the leading causes of death in container grown ivy?

Dumpthe soil, clean thepot and buy some new quality potting soil.

The following are good plants for a shade spot. If you want color you can get that effect with colorful foilage

Caladium, Coleus, Purple Oxlis.

A good shade flowering plant
-Impatience

These are also good plants for your lighting situation.
-Small Hostas, Ferns,

Thanks for the input. My Window boxes are approximately 4' long 1' wide and 5" deep I am trying to stay away from perenials as they are kind of pricey for window boxes. I tried a few perennials in my pots last year, which looked very nice, but the plants out grew their pots before the end of the season, and were pretty much dead by the time I tried to replant them into my garden. It was a waste of time and money. I would really like to stick with annuals if I can. I will definitely try the Begonias. Thanks so much for your input. It is greatly appreciated.

kerria japonica does well in shade. flowers are yellow/no fragrance. has green stems in winter. hard to track down, but its cheap and suckers a lot diggerb

first... in MI .. i would not plant any conifer until fall ... to be most careful ... its been near 100 for three days running.. for you too??? that is not prime planting season ... i am sure you are well enough versed if you want to reduce your odds a bit.. and plant it anyway ... is this a score from the english gardens sale you were talking about??? its deciduous .. and in MI.. that means .. at best.. what.. a 6 month growing season ... i would be very careful about how much shade you place it in ... and now that i checked.. its not variegated.. so your base question is.. can a green plant take sun???? green is green.. whether its lime or grass green ... i thought you meant it had white in it ... and white tissue is the only one i would protect for ... you will also be dealing with whether it is ready for blinding sun ... hardened off ... if it were me.. i would put it in shade.. and leave it potted until about mid september ... and then plant it.. in full sun... which will be not as intense by then.. in full sun and let it leaf out next spring .. and get itself ready for next summer.. after two cool root growing seasons ... taxodium should be rather bulletproof in MI ... let me put it another way.. its a tree... due to grafting.. its been in pots for 2 to 4 years ... many such conifers are incredibly rootbound ... and require full bare rooting.. and root surgery ... AND I WOULD NOT DO THAT THIS TIME OF YEAR ... ken
