i heard salvia can only be grown from cuttings but maybe thats only for salvia divinorum.

i will be growing a few species of peppers outside this year. 5 bhut jolokia, 2 tabasco, 2 cayenne, 4 california wonder and 4 scotch bonnet.

Hey Chinamon! Your seedlings look like their doing great! Josh (greenman) should come look at this thread, he too is growing peppers. I think he is doing Bhut J., Tabasco, Thai chile and some others I can't quite remember. His seedlings are doing very well. I think he had a 100% germinattion rate with his.

I'm not sure about the Salvia/Sage....A member from this sight gave me some so I'll try it out and see how it goes. Thanks for the heads up though! :)

In the second picture, is that Hydroton I see?! What are you growing in that? I've been thinking about using it for some of my plants.

Unfortunately, only 5 out of 6 of my Bhuts germinated - and, of those, only two are really vigorous.
My other peppers - Choc Hab, Thai, Arbol, Tobasco, and Poblano - all germinated at 100 percent!

So, Ashley, in addition to the peppers (which will actually go into the garden), I have random Japanese maple and Vine maple seeds planted.

I also have a Castor Bean 'Impala' in a container, waiting to go outdoors. I've nursed this seedling all winter, and I'm pleased that it's survived.

Hey Josh! Castor Bean "Impala" is a great looking plant. Is it a good size? My Coleus that I began inside have done very well but don't seem to be growing as much outside as I thought they would. Probably needs more time in the warmth and sunlight so that it can put out the energy to begin to grow into larger plants.

The Impala is pretty small, as far as Castor Beans go. Plus, I've kept it in a small container for the winter.
It sprouted in November, and I received it as a gift - otherwise I wouldn't have started it so soon.
I'm pretty sure it makes my skin itch whenever I accidentally brush the leaves.

Some big and small plants:

Citrus: I've been nurturing several container citrus for a year or so now, 2' to 2" in size: calamondin, yuzu, sudachi, tangelo, pummelo, kumquat, lemon. They haven't been 100% issue-free, but have still been a little easier than expected, and even when small they are very attractive plants.

Nightshades: sun gold tomato, currant tomato, tamarillo, pepino, cape gooseberry, cocona, naranjilla. These I started inside in Jan/Feb, and they have done variably well. The tomatoes have taken off. Pepinos have grown fairly well, but they are awfully delicate. The tamarillo is just coming up now - within the last day. The cape gooseberries are a bit delicate looking as well, but are a little sturdier than the pepinos. The coconas are short but stocky little things, with true leaves forming, and very nice-looking even when small. The naranjilla has been interesting - I only got one seed to germinate, but that sprout has done well; looks just like the cocona, but about twice as big.

Annonas: cherimoyas, sugar apple, custard apple. Great in containers; they were sprouted from seed mid-January, and have grown to between 6 and 12 inches tall. If there's a window around, they handle being inside very, very well. I put some of them out on our first 70 degree day, and discovered that they are VERY sensitive to wind and sunburn, even in warm weather, so that is something to look out for. My sugar apple and one of the custard apples were seriously damaged. The custard apple that remained inside, and the cherimoyas are beautiful little trees; farily vigorous as well.

I also have some ice cream bean seedlings in containers; they have been fairly effortless thus far. My feijoas haven't done as well - they HATED being inside over the winter, so I don't know how well they are as container trees, though I also still have LOTS to learn when it comes to container culture.

My most recent container gardening stretch of sorts, garlic. =) I planted two 10 gallon containers worth of it 2 days ago. I think 8-9 starts per container. Watch out, one of these days soon, i'll be growing potatoes & root vegetables in containers! lol

Tn, my buddy started a bunch of Elephant and Red Garlic in large containers...
and just this past weekend he started potatoes in a container!

A few months back, I took him a couple pounds of Elephant Garlic, and a housecleaner
threw them away because they had "dirt" on them and she thought they were bad.

Toms, peppers, cucurbits, herbs and flowers.

I'm going to be planting cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, maybe some heirloom tomatoes, squash, zucchini, and green beans. Gotta wait till after Wednesday though, payday.

I plan to have a vineyard in containers. I plan to head train them, like a tree. Let them grow to 5' tall, allow 4-5 shoots to be the branches, and let the vines from those branches, fall. I'm starting this whole adventure from cuttings that I received from UC Davis. And, they will start in these biodegradable containers that I can plant into a larger (preferably fabric) pot. I like the fabric pots because of the root pruning.

My fabric containers will be on the regular vineyard in ground drip system. They will not compete with the in-ground vines. They could offer dappled shade, which in the hottest place on earth, is not a bad thing!

First year I've tried to avoid killing plants in dirt in quite a while...starting out with Early Black Tomato, Paul Robeson Tomato, Ping Pong Tomato, Brandywine Tomato, Poblano Pepper, Jalapeno Pepper, Squash, Cucumber, Basil, Oregano, Arugula, Onions, and an expirement with some some Sweet Corn.

Drip irrigated, mostly in cheap 18 gallon containers we had empty after moving. The driveway sides are east/west, so will be interesting to see how they do. Thinking we may have some heat issues...

yes that is hydroton that you see. i am growing jalapenos in a top feed hydroponic system with 3gal buckets and 15gal reservoir using DNF nutrients supplements with grotek calmax.

In my case, the question is more likely "What haven't I been growing in containers?" To which I would have to answer, not much!

We live in extreme South TX, where the soil is hard-packed, extremely alkaline gumbo clay. Too old to be dealing with digging and trying to improve that mess, so I use raised beds and containers.

I started a garden blog last year. Got lots of pics, ideas, and ramblings on the trials and tribulations of trying to garden at all in this climate.

Oh, and Ashley, you mentioned the coleus don't seem to be going well. They take some time to get started, so be patient. And most don't care for full sun a whole lot. Some tolerate it better than others. Just something to keep in mind when deciding where to put them.

Wow chinamon! Those have grown quite a bit! I've been thinking about using hydroton but not sure if I should. Seeing your plants and how well they have done makes me think I should go get some now! haha :) When you began your plants, did you put the seed in the hydroton and wait for it to germinate? Could you explain the process either in this post or in a private message. I've been hesitant because I don't want to loose my plants by novice mistakes.

Haha Josh, its a shame about the garlic and your friends house cleaner threw it away. Some people see dirt and thinks its bad haha...on the contrary its super fresh! ;)

for all my plants i start my seeds in rockwool cubes. once they become seedlings i put them in to the container (for either hydroponics or soil/soilless mix).

for my plants at the front of the pic in the 4" green containers i am using Pro-Mix BX and watering them with 1/2 strength DNF hydroponic nutrients every other watering.

for my hydroponic plants i am using DNF and Grotek CalMax in the nutrient solution until i get roughly 1.8EC and 6.0pH.

Hi! This is my first post here. I'm a SAHM in cali (Zone 10). I have 6 containers and have gotten BACK into container gardening just recently. In my half wine casks I have grapes, blueberry bush, strawberries, cinnamon basil, lavender, roses, a kumquat tree and a blood orange tree. Indoors we are growing a bunch of jacaranda seedlings and hoping for the best. We (this being myself and my 6 year old gardening helper) are really happy with my garden thus far.

My son has been helping 10 yrs. now. It's good to have the kids involved!

I have a few fruit tree's doing well thanks to the help of friends here. Tomatoe's and a few herbs in containers right now.

I still need to plant some of my Basil! I love the cinnamon! also have licorice. I have blue berries that need to get moved into their pots.

And squash and gourd seedlings to pot up. I'll try and get back with photos later. :)
