Which is Better: Hard Wood VS MDF Raised Door Panels?
Comments (7)Basically, MDF is less prone to movement(expansion/contraction) due to seasonal temperature changes than solid wood. The construction of a raised panel door necessitated the panel be installed without glue/fasteners to allow for that seasonal movement. An example of allowing =for that movement in a dining room table is when the builder makes slots for the fasteners between the top and base instead of locking the top to the base with screws/glue. However, most MDF will retain moisture when in a wet condition----standing water is a flooded basement---for instance. There is a possibility, IMHO, that dripping water off the counter could land on the panels and seep into the groove made for the raised panel. Enough of that and the MDF would swell, causing the rail to crack. The type of wood used also has a bearing----oak is less absorbent, but looks terrible(IMHO) painted without filling the grain. Maple is good, poplar absorbs moisture more easily. It boils down to the climate and uses in your kitchen to determine the construction materials---as well as your wishes. Sounds to me like you'd rather have the wood---and real wood raised panels for the same price as MDF panels is a good deal----or the MDF panels are way overpriced....See MoreDoor style panels on ends of cabinets or flat panels?
Comments (43)Designov, I visited your post regarding your gorgeous new kitchen and due to the recessed doors that I love since I have been wanting the cabinets that you bought and the crown molding and the overall look, I felt it looked beautiful just the way it was with the matching end panels that were just not door style panels. I felt it looked pretty and finished and gorgeous. Thanks for sharing....See Morerefrigerator end panels flat or raised? Can I see pics. of yours?
Comments (9)I think it depends on the style of the rest of the kitchen. We put end panels on our peninsula ends and plan to do the same on the back. I was originally planning on also putting them on the ends of my upper cabs but my KD thought it might actually be overkill in our kitchen...we have a 10'6" x 15' in the main part plus another 6' on one wall (in front of the basement door) Our refrigerator has a wall on one side & cabs on the other, so I don't know what our KD would have suggested if there was no wall. I think she should would have suggested the panel b/c it faces the DR, but I'm not sure. Do you have any elevation drawings to post so we can see how it looks? My "gut" says to go with Live_Wire_Oak's recommendation! How many pictures do you have in PhotoBucket? I have over 900 pictures and no problems... [I did just upgrade (Wednesday) to Pro hoping for more options, but I had those pictures before that w/no problems.] How big are the pictures? If you go to your "Account Options" and look under "Account Dashboard" (on the right) it should tell you where you stand on the limits. You may just have pictures that are too big and therefore take up too much space... I reduce my pics to approx 550 x 500 before I upload them (reduce by %-age, not # to avoid distortion)....See Moreraised or flat panel kitchen cabinets?
Comments (12)I have the beveled edge Shaker and can confirm that you don't have to clean the corners. I also used the flat panel drawer fronts on all drawers under 8", just like the Shakers did. I have two 4-drawer stacks where the top three drawers are flat. I have natural cherry and love the grain of the cherry on the flat panels. In the photo Jakuvall posted, there are still sharp corners to clean. It looks too formal and library-ish for a modern kitchen....See MoreKim Hasty
