refrigerator end panels flat or raised?Can I see pics. of yours?

We are ordering our cabinets next week and I noticed on the written quote that the end panels are raised. I have raised panel doors and raised panels on island. The refridgerator is on an end run. Should I make them flat or keep them raised? I am afraid in my small kitchen the raised may be too much.

buehl, My kitchen is 9'6 x 16. I am trying to repost picture of layout but having trouble with photo bucket. I think I have posted my limit.

Here's my GE Profile side by side with wood panels. All the specs for making the panels are in the instruction manual that came with the panel ready fridge. In my case, nobody bothered to look at the specs, so we went thru three different versions of door panels. It would have been so simple for the KD to look at the instruction manual first. rhone -- that was my original plan...to put bookshelves with my prized cookbooks on that end, just at same height. if it raise it, you're right about all granite though. alku, those pics show me so much -- thank you. First, your cab doors, which i have seen on other posts, are precisely what i need to hide the micro. Second, it looks like the MW might be too low, even if we raised that part of the island 6" (other than me, my family is tall...or about to be tall). Think I'm going to return to idea of having MW up at eye level on my main wall, just behind closed doors if i can. Just have to figure that out, since MW is deeper than cabs. I guess that's what "custom" cabs are for, right?

There are gorgeous kitchens (Shaker) that are quite "plain," and there are also lovely kitchens that have more decorative elements. Also there were certain period design conventions --combinations of things that went together. Most recently, there was a great blog by Willow Decor identifying the "elements" of a Christopher Peacock kitchen -- which seems to have evolved as a "period" design in its own right (though it uses conventions from many other periods). In addition to the Willow Decor blog -- great tutorial --You might want to check out the kitchens that are organized by style on the Crown Point website. It's also a good tutorial. If you look at the Shaker kitchens you'll see that they're inset with hinges showing, but usually no bead or trim. They're flat panel and usually stained wood. The Victorian kitchens tended to have more design detail -- beaded inset, with a curved design on the toekick, and usually some glass in the cabinets. There are both painted and stained (and mixed). Both the Shaker and the Victorian kitchens are wonderful. It's not necessary, or course, to adhere strictly to any of these combinations of design elements that make up a period look. Third, the book "The New Bungalow Kitchen" does a good job of pointing out elements that work together. If you study all the photos you will start to see that certain elements look nice together. And it will help you figure out what you like.

Wash the walls first with a scrub brush and TSP to remove any wax or furniture polish that may have been used on the pine. Rinse & let dry. Hit any knots in the pine first with a shellac based primer. and let them dry. Use a really thick nap roller and a shellac based primer. Enlist a buddy to go behind you and brush into the grooves with a good angled sash brush. Do a second coat of primer, and you're ready for any topcoat color (2 coats) that you want. However, if the knotty pine is a design element throughout your home, I'd consider leaving the ceiling done alone and letting that be the warm wood element that ties the kitchen to the rest of the home. A wood ceiling can be a truly fabulous design detail, especially since you're eliminating the rest of the wood tones in favor of paint. You can always go back and paint it if you don't care for the look, but well, the big reason that everyone is kinda cautioning you against painting the wood is that it's virtually impossible to remove that paint once it's done. It's a really really permanant decision. And if it's an original feature to your home, then many potential future buyers would consider it as eliminating period charm that adds value to the home. Even if you don't plan on selling for a while, it's important for you to understand the impact that your changes can make at resale time. Originality sells, and a home is only original once. Once altered, it's not possible to say, "ooops, do-over" without a HUGE amount of effort that most don't want to expend.

If the refrigerator faces the open room, then it looks more finished to have the raised panel of the doors on the panel. It looks flat and unfinished otherwise. Even in a small kitchen, the look is worth it. It depends on how your cabinet maker constructs the panel whether or not you lose any space by going with a finished end panel. At the most, you'll losse 3/4" to do it, and with some makers, you lose no additional space but gain a completed look to your kitchen.

I think it depends on the style of the rest of the kitchen. We put end panels on our peninsula ends and plan to do the same on the back. I was originally planning on also putting them on the ends of my upper cabs but my KD thought it might actually be overkill in our kitchen...we have a 10'6" x 15' in the main part plus another 6' on one wall (in front of the basement door)

Our refrigerator has a wall on one side & cabs on the other, so I don't know what our KD would have suggested if there was no wall. I think she should would have suggested the panel b/c it faces the DR, but I'm not sure.

Do you have any elevation drawings to post so we can see how it looks?

My "gut" says to go with Live_Wire_Oak's recommendation!

How many pictures do you have in PhotoBucket? I have over 900 pictures and no problems... [I did just upgrade (Wednesday) to Pro hoping for more options, but I had those pictures before that w/no problems.] How big are the pictures? If you go to your "Account Options" and look under "Account Dashboard" (on the right) it should tell you where you stand on the limits. You may just have pictures that are too big and therefore take up too much space... I reduce my pics to approx 550 x 500 before I upload them (reduce by %-age, not # to avoid distortion).

buel, I only have 10 pics on there. I don't know what the !!!** I'm doing wrong. I looked at my account and I have plenty of room.I 'll keep trying. I agree with live wire also I guess I just needed an objective opinion.. My kitchen I would say is traditional. Thanks for your help. Your photobucket challenged garden webber!

This isn't exactly what you're after...but it's at least an example of the faux door panel to the left of my fridge. I have a flat panel on the other side adjacent to the cabinet run. Good luck!

Our doors are recessed panel, and the side fridge panels are also recessed.
