raised or flat panel kitchen cabinets?

Building a new house. Trying to choose between flat panel or raised panel kitchen cabinets. They will be white.
Any thoughts to help?

I am all for not dusting in nooks and crannies anymore!

I agree with karen.ohio 100%, if you do go with a shaker or craftsman style they have some visual depth but not 99 nooks and crannies on each door or drawer to dust or try to get kitchen spooge out of. Flat panel is always nice too.

I had thought about using a roller and backbrushing. Brushworks indicated he would just brush it, but he may just be that good and fast that rolling and backbrushing doesn't gain him anything. I will likely do a little experimenting early on to fine-tune the procedure, but anything I can learn "the easy way" up front is always nice. Pete

Oh my gosh people, you're killing me with these wonderful kitchens. Can not wait to start on this but realize now it's going to be a big project. After seeing how everyone's kitchens turned out it is obvious that it will be worth it. I'm sure I'll be asking for more help as I go along. Thanks so much for the postings so far! You people are the best. These pictures will show you some of what is ahead for me. The backsplash behind the stove makes me feel as though I am in the bathroom. White cabinets, new appliances, backsplash AND a new light fixture will make such a difference. Speaking of light fixture....anyone have any thoughts on it? Clean them and replace handles w retro chrome. They are good for the era they come from. Unless a full remodel is coming best to enjoy the beautiful built on site cabinets. Get a new French door fridge and maybe a new light fixture or various other things......fancy window shade? At some point bigger changes occur but if the space and the storage and condition of cabs is okay I'd be in heaven to live w an older kitchen of this sort. Many older kitchens aren't this good. Don't paint the cabs

Do you mean shaker style doors or a truly flat slab door? If you mean a slab door then I would lean toward something sleek and modern to complement the modern look of a slab door. Drawer handles at roughly 1/3 the width are visually pleasing ... except if you have narrow drawers (like 12" wide or less) and then I go with "what does my hand fit into nicely?". I think I wound up with about a 4.5" handle on those drawers, just a smidge larger than 1/3 of the width. On drawers that are wide, like 30+", you might struggle to find a single pull that is large enough. I used 8" handles on my 30" wide drawers because the style I liked didn't come any larger - unless I used an appliance pull and those just looked wrong. It looks fine, larger would have looked better but my island has a 30" base, 24" base, 30" base in series and the drawer handles are consistent so it seems reasonable. Good luck, they are expensive little things when you need so many!

I bake a bit and flour collects along the edge of my flat panel doors. Very challenging to remove. Talked with someone last week looking to switch- "tired of getting in there with Q tips"
There are raised panels with a smooth profile whcih "may" be easier to deal with. No nooks and crannies and deflect spooge from the groove at the bottom-maybe.

This is a relevant discussion for us as well. We found with our sort of Shaker style (with arched tops) builder special doors, there was dusting to do on the doors too. Jakuvall,
can you please post a picture of this raised panel/smooth profile door?

I picked Shaker flat panel doors with a beveled edge. I am hoping this eliminates most dust collection.

Just a personal preference ... I think raised panel look nicer/more expensive

It depends on the look you are going for. I think raised is more traditional. When I mentioned I wanted a more transitional look, to match my house, 2 KDs suggested a version of Shaker.

That was the exact door style we were leaning towards. Thanks very much for posting the photo and diagram.

To anyone who has the style posted by Jakuvall above in use does the raised panel deflect some kitchen mess and dust at all?

I have the beveled edge Shaker and can confirm that you don't have to clean the corners. I also used the flat panel drawer fronts on all drawers under 8", just like the Shakers did. I have two 4-drawer stacks where the top three drawers are flat. I have natural cherry and love the grain of the cherry on the flat panels.

In the photo Jakuvall posted, there are still sharp corners to clean. It looks too formal and library-ish for a modern kitchen.
