Door Panels on cabinet ends or Finished Sides? (Ordering today)
Comments (19)I agree with susanka. Even if you ended up doing 1/2 of your door panels, that would be $600 saved, which is a very nice high-end kitchen faucet, or warming drawer (have seen several new ones on CL for $400 range), etc. I definitely wouldn't do your cabs near the sink, but maybe would consider it for the desk area, since it's more 'furniture' than just kitchen cabs. The french doors on the left: are they going out side, and usually closed, or are they going to another room, and will usually be open? I'm trimming out the bookcase at the end of my island, since it's somewhat exposed, but won't worry about my cabinet ends, since I only have one that would face the family room, and hopefully it won't be too noticeable, since it's sitting at the end of my large peninsula/eating bar....See Moreapplied end panels vs no end panel
Comments (4)I'm having a little trouble envisioning what you mean by applied end panels. I have side panels on my cabinets and wouldn't have it any other way. They just make the cabinets looks so much more finished and beautiful. I recently had the master bath cabinets painted and added the end panels and wow what a difference! They went from looking builder grade to furniture quality. I will try to add some pics, photobucket is not as easy as it used to be, I had more to show but it's just nearly impossible to get photos to show up in photobucket and it takes forever. The first two photos are my house and the 3rd one is a show house in our area from a few months ago....See MoreChanging old flat panel birch cabinets to shaker style??
Comments (10)I had similar cabinets and here are the options I found: 1. Cut out the centers (leaving just a frame around) and insert new panels inside that frame. I didn't opt for this option because my edges were pretty beaten up. 2. You can apply a "edge", like you mentioned, but you won't be able to really cover up the routed edges. You'd have to fill them with auto body filler and then sand - lot of work. 3. Get some poplar wood and plywood and using just a table saw, glue, and clamps you can build completely new shaker style doors. I built 12 doors and it cost me about $150 for the materials. It was totally worth it. The cabinets look like new!!!! If I knew how to, I'd post some pictures. Love the end effect!...See MoreKeeping flat panel doors flat
Comments (5)Re: MDF I have to laugh at myself for not thinking of this. When I was more active as a woodworker, it was standard practice to say this stuff should never, ever be used in a wet location, but I currently have some scrap that has been sitting outside my shop, in the rain and snow for three weeks, and it looks almost as good as new. I guess this makes sense, since it's 98 percent waterproof glue. The tiny amount of humidity in my bath isn't going to ruin a well painted MDF cabinet door. Excellent suggestion. Extra points for it being the cheapest option, but I do half to deduct a couple points because I will have to lift the 100 lb sheets onto my saw... (considering 1/2 inch...)...See Morebmorepanic
