Designers in our area do it either way. Newer (younger) ones seem to be always CAD and older pros seem to be the ones that hand draw. Only issue I have seen is math errors made by the manual drawing (dimensions that don't add up properly). Then again, our house plans were CAD drawn and several dimensional issues were overlooked that we had to cortrect as we found them. I wouldn't lose any sleep over the issue. A big advantage you have is that you will be on-site and can discuss these issue with the framer, etc. and oversee that nothing is missed.

Cad or hand drawn, concerning framing, the framer initiates the layout from centers, specs, details off of the plans. One thing for you to be up on is to check that structural maembers wont be interfering with the trades that follow the framer,(plumber, electrician, hvac),so that part of the framing coincides with the alyout of the other trades. How they route their "mechanicals" is highly dependent on the framer and how members are layed out. When interfered, items such as ducting can lessen the efficiency of the system that is designed for your footprint. Things like tub/shower drain layouts as well as lighting placement can also be affected, so it would be a good idea for you to double check locations/framing layouts at the end of each day as a change/fix will be easier to take care of at that point rather than after completely framed in most cases. The other trades can typically remove blocking, cut into certain framing aspects, but cant or are limited when it comes to any structural members, so it's good that you will be onsite to oversee these areas as they progress.

Biltmore..The Breakers...The White House...Fallingwater...The Empire State Building...The Chrysler building...etc. Were all drawn by hand.

Probably depends on the builder. We worked with an architect who seemed to rework every little detail, and of course this was costing us money. So when we got to a point where we felt as if he had done all that we wanted from him, we asked our builder how much of a detailed plan he needed. His response: "You could draw it on a *$#%ing napkin, and I'll build it for you." So far, he seems to be right on!

We had highly details CAD plans and the builder rarely even looked at them, as evidenced by the multitudes of mistakes they made. I would worry less about the drawings and more about the actual building. Since you can be on site every day, you should be fine, provided you are VERY familiar with your own plans or at least have a way to contact the architect with questions.

Probably more important than what your builder wants, is what the permit issuing authority wants. I always hand draw my plans and have never had a problem with hand drawn plans. You just have to make sure every detail is specified. CAD plans are no better than hand drawn in this regard because the details still have to be chosen and specified by the computer operator.
When I built my house 30 years ago I walked in with the plans one day and picked up the permit the next and this was for a two story plus daylight basement 3400 square foot house. Two years ago when I applied for a 200 square foot addition, it took 2 months to get the permit. They found nothing wrong with the plans, it's just that they are kinda out of control and thus overloaded with the permit process.
The permit authority will go through the plans in detail to assure that everything is designed to code such as size and spacing of beams, floor joists and rafters. Will check to make sure there are not errors such as having a door open out over a stairwell (I saw that once on an architects plans), and making sure railings are specified for correct height and spacing, etc.

We just finished a house that was built to hand drawn plans. My only complaint was that revisions took longer than i expected - but the plans were very detailed and worked well.

The only advantage to the owner of CAD documents is if you want to remodel the house later and even then you would need to verify that it was built exactly as drawn and find a designer who could use the old CAD version.

The advantage to the designer is that it is easier to make changes and to move from one phase of the design to the next using the same base drawings. The disadvantage is that the computer knows the EXACT dimension of everything you draw so you must draw accurately if you want to use automatic CAD dimensioning. This level of accuracy can be expensive.

The contractor who likes to work from a napkin intends to build the house HE thinks you should have rather than the one YOU and your DESIGNER have agreed upon. You need to make up your mind early which of these houses you want and prepare the drawings accordingly. I suppose some people might not care much about what they get for their money but I have yet to run into any.
