Finished Kitchen Reveal -- Traditional Yellow Stained Cabs
Comments (68)gbsim, we do like the JennAir drawers a lot. They weren't our first choice either; originally we were going to go with 2 fridge drawers but we decided near the last minute that we wanted a freezer drawer and this JennAir model was the best choice. One thing that gave us some pause was the lack of movable dividers. Since we keep bags of milk there for smoothies I was initially against these drawers since I figured the milk jug would tip over. But function (the deep freezer drawer and ice maker) won out and I just bought little container/dividers to go inside the drawers to keep it organized. Works perfectly. We haven't noticed much cycling and the temperature is good. I'm not sure about the noise. It's not something we've ever noticed but that's not saying much as we usually have the TV or stereo going and appliance noise isn't something that usually bothers us. I don't think they're loud though; I notice the dishwasher but have never noticed the fridge/freezer drawers. No problems making the cabinet panels flush; they just took the exact same drawer front thickness as the rest of our drawers. One thing I really like about these drawers is that they give a loud beeping noise if the drawers are open more than about 60 (I think?) seconds. That has saved us I don't know how many times! The rest of our drawers are soft-closing, and many times we've just sort of pushed these ones lightly and walked away, unconsciously applying the same pressure as for a standard drawer. Of course that leaves the fridge or freezer ajar, and instead of coming back to melted ice or sour milk, the beeping saved us countless times. That might be a standard feature on all fridge drawers, I don't know. It wasn't something we checked out in advance but it's definitely something we appreciate now. Good luck and have fun with your remodel....See MoreER need help...cherry vs. painted cabs/we don't agree!
Comments (25)oruboris: I don't agree. We do have stained cabinets, not because of any trend, but rather because they fit with our decor. Following your logic, since the 50's stained cabinets have been the norm. There are probally a far higher precentage of stained cabinets in kitchens today than painted ones. I suppose that makes stained cabinets, um, ... well common? And cherry? Often refered to as timless, I suppose that must mean in the next decade or so it will become, um, ...well...tired, and then tiresome? And berryberry: When is the last time you tried to strip off a modern stain finish so that you could paint over your cabinets? Easier said than done. In any case, if your kitchen works well, looks new, has a reasonable level of quality componets, and feels good to you and yours, it will take decades before it will become dated. Only a few trends in kitchen design have not lasted over the past 50 years, painted and/or stained cabinets are not on that list, but Avacado green is. :-)...See MoreFactory Baked on Finish
Comments (37)So, in line with this thread, we had completely custom cabinets crafted as part of our kitchen remodel one year ago. We had a good many difficulties with our cabinet maker and believe that the painting was done hastily because he was late. We were told that painting was done 'in the booth'. He used a pre-catalyzed lacquer color matched to Benjamin Moore Atrium White (not BM paint, however), formulated to California requirements. Well, the doors (and cabinets) under/around our sink have been repainted twice and the doors are peeling and chipping yet again. Yes, water does drip down (we have a farmhouse sink and water drops down the front tend to be a pitfall), but we are very good about monitoring this and these doors DO need to be able to stand up to some moisture (they are flush inset doors). In any event, the paint cracks follow the joints of the doors and the peeling always starts at a seam or joint. The latest painter who's attempting to fix this says that the doors weren't primed properly in any of the previous paintings. This is not just ridiculous -- it's expensive to have these doors repainted 3 times a year. I know about the restrictions on formulations in CA. So, I'm wondering if there are cabinet companies elsewhere where we can send our doors and a paint swatch for repainting -- and appropriate baking to make the finish more water resistant. That won't help failures on the cabinets themselves, but the doors are by far the worst. Any ideas or recommendations out there?...See MorePainted finish better on factory cabs?
Comments (6)Originally I was appalled at the estimate for site painted cabinets in two bathrooms and a hall. But once the swarm of painters arrived and I saw the huge amount of prep they did, well, I'm impressed. The cabinets feel like satin. A friend had site painted cabinets and spilled some blackberry jam while she was canning and thought, "oh no!" It all washed right off and didn't leave a stain. So I'm sure there are several ways to get an excellent result with painted cabinets. I wouldn't automatically assume that factory finished is better just based on our experience. OTH another friend has site painted cabinets and they have not done well at all. Finding a very good painter is the key. Good luck....See MoreD Dawson
