Comments (2)I had Wood-Mode cabinets for over 18 years through my kids growing up years with lots of boys hanging out at our house. They saw LOTS of use and when we moved, there was not one ding or rub on the factory baked on finish. We are now in the process of installing Crown Point painted with the same finish. They have been in storage for a while (that is another story) and have been hit on a regular basis by the subs working on the house and so far no problems. I love the way they look and feel. Comments (1)When I got my bid on the cabinets, I didn't even know that I was getting the poplar. I just found out by calling him 2 weeks ago when someone asked. I am doing the cream color painted at his site, but am having much difficulties choosing the color. He's been waiting for me to pick one; so, I haven't seen the finished product. Comments (4)We had this problem arise with our last kitchen. We had all the cabs custom built by a local cabinetmaker; pine with a whitewashed finish on them. The color faded, yellowed and rubbed off very quickly. Over the next seven years, we talked with many experts in the fields of paint, construction, cabinetmaking,insurance claims, etc., in conjunction with the lawsuit we filed (because the cabs were falling apart and off the walls, not because of the fading, though). We were told over and over again that factory paint finishes are much harder and more durable. The experts we talked with did say that the expertise of the cabinetmaker, which clear sealer he puts over the painted finish and how many coats he puts on does impact the durbility a lot, but their opinions all still went with the factory finish as being the hardest and most durable. Comments (1)It's really easy to rub stain into a scratch on a wood door and make it hardly noticeable. I decided against paint for my new kitchen without any children (much less five under five!) and no animals, because I knew there would be scratches and I knew I wouldn't like the resulting "patina". You can paint out scratches a bit, but it's hard with a factory paint job. Factory paint is more durable than brushed paint, but brushed paint is easier to "fix". So... how much do you like the white vs. how much do you hate bumps and scratches? Would you ever consider something as unstylish as melamine? As expensive as lacquer? Do you expect to move or redo your kitchen by the time your kids are in their teens? Or when they're out of the house? Or do you expect this kitchen to survive their childhood?...See Morepatti_bee
